Implements effective researched-based instructional strategies for basic sequences of skills in the academic, social, and vocational curricular areas; including techniques for modifying instructional methods, curricular materials, and the environment to meet learners’ needs that are appropriate to those learners’ ages and skill levels.

Uses instructional time effectively and efficiently; while facilitating the integration of related services into the instructional program.

Implements instructional strategies that promote successful transitions for individuals with disabilities.

Provides frequent and appropriate updates to families about their child’s instructional program and conveys information about individual student progress in a culturally sensitive manner.

Has working knowledge of resources, strategies, networks, organizations, and unique services for individuals with disabilities and their families including career, vocational, and transition support, including possible funding agencies and financial sources for secondary aged students (local, state, and federal).

Demonstrates effective use of diagnostic data to identify student strengths and weaknesses and use available information/services to assess the knowledge, skills and capabilities of the students.

Establish student goals and objectives through the use of data gathered in assessment.

Understands and attends to the impacts of implicit bias in teaching and education.

Position Summary: The Foundational Skills Classroom Teachers are access experts for students receiving their education with their same age peers in the general education and special education settings. The FSC focuses on teaching routines leading to the highest degree of independence possible for each student. The FSC serves students in kindergarten and through 12th grade identified with significant cognitive and/or pervasive developmental disabilities. The teacher will be a resource to families and other school staff around the students they serve and how to meaningfully include them in the school community where the programs are located.

Physical Requirements:
1. Must be able to assume a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, crouching, sitting, standing) in the course of working with children with developmental disabilities and severe behavior problems.
2. Must be able to restrain/hold/transport clients in the course of behavioral management.
3. Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication
4. Must have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work
assigned.
5. Must be able to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.
6. Must be able to travel to and from different locations and sites in the greater Albany area.
7. Must have manual dexterity sufficient to perform various keyboard functions.
8. Must be physically present at the assigned job site.
Related Training:
Term of Employment: Not to exceed 191 paid days or as set by negotiated agreement. May include extended contract days or extra-duty assignments. Salary and benefits based on current District Salary Schedule and negotiated agreement.
