Winery Accountant
Since its founding in 1989 by Ben (Bernardus) Pon, Bernardus Winery has been the producer of premier class wines that rival the greatest on the globe. Located in beautiful Carmel Valley, this Dutch family-owned winery with long tenured staff is currently seeking an experienced, seasoned and detail-oriented accounting professional to join our exciting team!
Position Summary:
This position provides the daily operation of general ledger and production accounting activities for winery operations, including payroll support for payroll service provider, general ledger month end closing process, account reconciliations and reporting, bulk wine and cases goods costing, product inventory and balance sheets, fixed asset/CIP reporting and analysis, AP and AR, cash management and ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP). Position will be responsible for helping Holland-based CFO in preparation of accurate and timely monthly Financial Statements and cash flow statements. Additionally, the accountant will support the Owners and specific winery management in the planning and budgeting process, quarterly/annual costing and tax preparation with company’s CPA partner.
Accountant Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages financial data and ensures data integrity and accuracy.
- Prepares and reconciles asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
- Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare journal entries for financial statement generation.
- Reconciliation of bank accounts
- Manages fixed asset process and policy in conjunction with Holland ownership.
- Substantiates financial transactions by auditing documents.
- Maintains accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
- Guides staff in accounting needs by coordinating activities and answering questions.
- Secures financial information by completing database backups.
- Complies with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
- Provides data and serves as a resource for external financial and tax audit examination processes.
- Management of the Sales and Use Tax accounting and reporting process.
- Maintenance of accounting system chart of accounts and vendor master files.
- Conducts monthly closings, journal entries, account reconciliations, year-end closing and preparation of audit work papers at year end.
- Maintains customer confidence and protects operations by keeping financial information confidential.
About the Bernardus Accountant position. Bernardus offers a flexible work schedule from its office in Carmel Valley Village. Starting salary between $80 – 100,000 depending on experience with competitive benefits including 22 days PTO, Health Insurance, Dental and Vision Plans, employee funded 401(k), AD & D policy, discounts on Bernardus wines and a great working environment.
Accountant Job Qualifications/Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, tax or finance
- 7 years progressive accounting experience within a winery or hospitality environment
- Advanced proficiency in Dynamics 365 Business Central
- Attention to Detail
- Deadline-Oriented with excellent time management skills
- Possess credible and ethical work history
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and strong quantitative and analytical thinking skills
