Position Overview:
The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore is recruiting for a driven individual to fulfil the role of Accounting Specialist in our Norfolk office. The Accounting Specialist, under the supervision of the Accounting Manager, is engaged in a range of financial activities including accounts payable and receivable, expense reports, grant disbursements and reporting, and payroll processing. The person who accepts this role will also provide administrative support to the Chief Financial Officer, Director of Human Resources and Accounting Manager.
Work hours: Monday – Friday; full-time. This position requires the occasional nights and/or weekends.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Commit to and understand the FSEVA’s mission. This includes active participation in sharing the mission, vision, and values of the organization, internally and externally, creating a culture of active philanthropy for and through all staff.
- Responsible for serving as backup to each functional area withing accounting.
- Responsible for processing payroll on a biweekly basis.
- Assists the Human Resources Director with administration of employee benefits.
- Responsible for gathering data used to corroborate FBSEVA grant requests to outside organizations.
- Responsible for backing up the primary personnel overseeing the accounts payable accounts receivable functions.
- Responsible for becoming proficient on the Ceres system, and being able to run reports, etc.
- Will work with the Accounting Manager in providing information, budgets, etc. for the various programs, which may be also used to support grant requests.
- Will provide support for payment processing.
- Collaborate with CFO and Accounting Manager in streamlining various accounting processes (e.g., downloading reports form Ceres to Excel spreadsheets, maintenance of fixed assets schedule, monthly, etc.)
- Responsible for working with the Accounting Manager in ensuring that governmental and other compliance documents are filed timely.
- Ensures accounts payable, expense reports, and disbursements comply with operating procedures to control expenses; communicates procedures to staff members for compliance.
- Performs other duties assigned by the Accounting Manager or Chief Financial Officer.
- Complete other tasks as assigned or requested by the direct supervisor, department head or Senior Management.
Educational Achievement:
- Minimum: Associate’s degree in accounting from an accredited University or College or commensurate work experience.
Work Experience:
- Minimum: 2 years of experience working in an accounting department, working with accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll processing.
- Preferred: Microsoft Navision/Ceres experience.
Required Skills, Abilities & Certifications/Licenses:
- Strong computer skills; particularly Excel (e.g., Pivot tables, V-lookup, etc.)
- Must be detail oriented.
- An ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- A criminal background and credit check is required for this position.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and demonstrate efficient time management.
Preferred Skills, Abilities & Certifications/Licenses:
- Experience in a nonprofit is desired, but not necessary.
Physical Demands: While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, when working in office or warehouse environment:
- This job requires that weight be lifted, or force be exerted up to 25 pounds when handling donations, documents and files.
- Close vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); working with documents, computer screens and filing.
- Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus when operating equipment.
- Regularly required to talk or hear when communicating with employees and clients.
- Use hands and fingers to handle or feel.
- Reach with hands and arms.
- The employee frequently is required to stand and or walk for extended periods of time.
Travel Requirements:
- Local and regional travel may be required.
Pay: Starting at $18.00/hour
