Status: Ongoing part-time position, non-exempt
Hours: Varies, work schedules may range from a minimum of 1-2 hours per week and up. Hours are flexible and adjust by the season.
Salary: $25 - $30 Hourly
Location: Eden Prairie Community Center – Aquatics Center

Description of work environment:
We are looking for individuals with strong aquatic background and swimming skills to specialize in teaching people with disabilities basic understanding of stroke development, lifesaving safety skills, enhancing comfort in and around pools and general pool usage. The Adaptive Swim Instructor will create individualized lesson plans for private 1:1 lesson as well as semi-private lessons that support participants with disabilities learning goals, provide the necessary adaptations, accommodations, and tools to the participant for learning success. The position will require you to work in the water with participants of varying skill levels and disabilities.
Position Responsibilities
This position is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact:
- Establishes clear individualized lesson plans that support the participants learning goals.
- Experiences with individuals who experience cognitive, physical, or sensory processing differences.
- Assists participant in using age-appropriate self-management skills including communication, self-regulation, self-help skills, motor skills, play and relationship skills.
- Provides the opportunity for success by adapting activities, managing behaviors, and providing additional assistance as needed.
- Encourages participants to be as independent as possible and respects each participant’s unique learning style.
- Always ensures safety of participant.
- Provides high quality customer service by consistently exhibiting an enthusiastic attitude; greeting participants with a smile, eye contact, and personalized message; responding to questions with accurate information or referring them to an appropriate contact.
- Communicates with parents/guardians, program staff, and supervisor about the program and participant progress.
While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.
Position Requirements
- 16 years of age or older
- One (1) year experience working/volunteering in a recreation, aquatics, education, or related field.
- Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification required or willingness to obtain certification.
- CPR (infant, child, and adult) and First Aid/AED certified or within the first 30 days of employment.
- Experience working with or being around individuals with disabilities required; must be able to demonstrate patience, flexibility, communication, organization, resourceful, and maintain confidentiality.
- Must be comfortable in the water and be a strong swimmer.
- Must have proven dependability, teamwork, ability to make necessary accommodations and readiness to actively participate in all aspects of the program. Behavioral support a plus.
- Basic knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PPT)
