Job description
The Education Department at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University invites applications for an adjunct instructor in Elementary Math Methods K-6 beginning Fall 2023.
This instructor will teach a one section of Elementary Math Methods in fall, and another in spring. If qualified, this instructor could also teach Middle Level Math methods as needed. The Education Department includes 8 full-time faculty and 6 part-time faculty. We offer an Elementary Licensure program with endorsements (including math), as well as a variety of K-12 and secondary licenses. Our programs are approved by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board. Our department focuses on the values of community, training teacher leaders, teacher education as part of the liberal arts, and training teachers to advocate for equity.
College of Saint Benedict (CSB), a liberal arts college for women; Saint John’s University (SJU), a liberal arts college for men; a graduate School of Theology; and graduate Nursing programs for both men and women. The campuses are located in the central lakes area of Minnesota, surrounded by more than 3,000 acres of pristine forests, prairies, and lakes. With a total enrollment of approximately 3,000 students, faculty members develop relationships with students in small classroom settings and have opportunities to work closely with students on research projects, experiential learning experiences, and study abroad programs. Recent initiatives to create a dynamic general education curriculum and a new teaching and learning center demonstrate strong institutional support for faculty development. - Teaching diverse undergraduate students in elementary math methods course,
- Supervising candidates in the field as available,
- Developing and maintaining relationships with schools,
- Engaging in professional and/or scholarly activities related to math education and STEM/STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math),
- Participate in informal student advising.
- Minimum of a master’s degree in elementary education K-6, math education or a related field,
- One of the following: (i) at least 18 graduate credits aligned to math or elementary education, or (ii) completed a dissertation or published peer-reviewed research in math education, or (iii) completed a state-approved teacher preparation program aligned to math education and 3+ years of successful K-12 teaching experience,
- Three years of effective and culturally relevant teaching experience as a teacher of record in grades K-6,
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness, and
- Demonstrated leadership in the field
- Graduate preparation in math education or an education field,
- Middle level mathematics endorsement,
- At least one year of effective culturally relevant teaching aligned to math in grades 5-8, and
- Effective teaching at undergraduate level, and
- Interest in providing math teacher education consistent with the liberal arts.
Candidates are asked to complete the application form and a cover letter addressing job qualifications, a curriculum vitae, an unofficial transcript, a list of two current references, a teaching philosophy, and a statement of how the candidate practices anti-racist pedagogies for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
