Job Purpose
The Aggregate Plant Supervisor works from an uncompromising focus on the health and safety of all personnel on site; while concurrently managing Extraction and Processing of the Sand & Gravel Operation. This hands-on leader will work with the Operations Manager to monitor and optimize plant production processes and costs through strong leadership and experience.
Key Job Functions: % of Time Spent on Function on an Annualized Basis
1. Safety: The Plant Supervisor’s first responsibility is leading internal and external personnel in safely executing all activities on the site, including extraction, plant operations (pre-work inspections, SLAMS, safety equipment maintenance and operation, MSHA compliance, etc), contractor activities, and product distribution. 15%
2. Production: Focus on increasingly innovative production methods, scheduling and staffing of personnel and managing production processes to achieve volume goals while optimizing cost; including uptime, tons per hour, overtime/wage control, and contractor management. 35%
3. Maintenance: Plans and leads execution of all plant maintenance to achieve balance between maintenance spend and equipment operational availability, prioritizing repair spend and preventive maintenance to maximize equipment operational life. 25%
4. Inventory and Quality Control: Works with QC team to establish target production of in-spec products that meet applicable testing and reporting requirements. 10%
5. Procurement: Works with vendors and internal purchasing group to procure needed parts and services, balancing production needs with costs and lead times. 5%
6. Reclamation/Environmental: Works with internal and external groups to comply with environmental and reclamation targets/obligations and company guidelines. 10%
Organization Structure: The Plant Supervisor reports to the Plant Operations Manager
Skills:
- Interpersonal Skills: Plant Supervisor must be able to effectively communicate with employees, other departments and managers and senior management.
- Leadership Skills: Plant Supervisor must be able to motivate employees and manage conflicts to keep operations running smoothly.
- Time Management: Plant Supervisor face production deadlines, shipping dates and more and must manage their time accordingly.
- Industrial Equipment: knowledge of heavy mobile and fixed mining, asphalt production, Trucking, and related equipment.
Education – DOE
Experience – 5+ years experience in aggregates production environment. Asphalt Knowledge a plus.
Knowledge (technical/practical/managerial) – Strong knowledge of production techniques in aggregates extraction and processing, asphalt production, and a working knowledge of materials trucking/logistics.
PROBLEM SOLVING – Plant Supervisor must be able to quickly assess situations and be decisive in solving underlying issues, such as identifying defects in the production line. Plant managers are the front line for problem solving at the site. Key problem solving skills include 1) Problem diagnosis prior to or during adverse events 2) Establishing a detailed and realistic plan to resolve. 3) Carrying out the plan 4) Verifying implemented plans are effective and sustainable.
Given the complexity of equipment involved in the overall production process, the plant manager needs to quickly diagnose issues that may be related to multiple processes and production stages, while working to continue production during the resolution process.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
- The ability to independently recognize production related problems or inefficiencies and take decisive action to correct, communicating issues with management and other internal groups in a timely manner, ensuring prompt resolution.
- Working knowledge of QC standards and materials testing techniques.
Working Conditions:
- Intermediate level of physical activity, e.g., standing, walking, climbing, sustained keyboarding, working in awkward or constrained physical positions or confined/restricted space for up to 50% of the work day
- Frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable conditions e.g. conditions of dust, dirt, noise, odours, inclement weather, grease/oil etc.
- Work activities involve the need to concentrate on a variety of sensory inputs for intermediate durations of time requiring close attention several times daily
- Frequent exposure to mental pressure conditions where the mental stress would be noticeable e.g., deadlines that are competing, dealing with clients who are angry, demanding, uncooperative etc..
