Airworthiness Certification Engineer - Technical Specialist III in GAC Savannah


Unique Skills:

  • Expert level understanding of regulatory compliance under FAA Part 21 certification procedures, preferably associated with Part 25 transport category airplanes. Experience on new or amended type certification (TC) programs, type design major change projects, or supplemental type certification (STC) projects required.
  • Understanding of EASA process and CS 25 regulatory requirements is required (experience with other foreign authorities is acceptable in lieu of EASA).
  • Expert level understanding of determination and application of certification methods of compliance to the airworthiness standards is required.
  • Significant experience in understanding FAA requirements conveyed via issue papers for special conditions, equivalent levels of safety findings, and unsafe features or characteristics, and ability to aid in developing the applicant position.
  • Strong communication and written composition skills essential for authoring and reviewing technical documents such as certification plans, summary compliance reports, applicant positions on rulemaking documents such as issue papers and petitions for exemption, etc.
  • Understanding of test article conformity is desired.
  • Experience working with organization designation authorization (ODA) principles is desired.
  • Collaborative teamwork skills and ability to develop professional relationships with internal and external project stakeholders is desired.
  • Ability to provide a high level of mentorship and team leadership for coworkers.


Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in a discipline relevant to the position required. 13 years specific certification experience or 18 years broad engineering experience. Experience credit considered for related adv degrees limited to 2 yrs for Masters, 4 yrs for PhD in fields applicable to this job.

Position Purpose:

Responsible for successful planning and completion of a variety of engineering and supportive tasks associated with the Compliance Assurance Organization, Organization Designation Authority, FAA, EASA and other foreign civil aviation authorities. Responsibilities include leading, generating, processing, and supporting the review of engineering documentation required. for certification programs from project start to closure.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:
  • Reviews and approves group deliverables (certification plans, summary compliance reports, correspondence, noise data sheets, etc.) .

  • Makes authoritative decisions and recommendations for problem solution through application of advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts in areas where engineering precedents are lacking.

  • Is a recognized leader and an authority in multiple areas of certification; presents certification requirement recommendations to multi-disciplinary design teams and upper management .

  • Researches and determines impact of NPRMs or potential changes to guidance material (industry or regulatory) to apply to future design development .

  • Recommends strategy for group processes, tools, deliverables and responsibilities.

  • Develop and present briefings on certification strategy, status to organization leadership and regulatory authorities, as assigned.

  • Develops work methods and standard operating procedures for certification methods, processes, and tools. Recommend improvements to existing processes.

  • Authors issue papers and assists in preparation of applicant response.

  • Participates in industry conferences, working groups, and/or committees related to aviation certification as assigned.

  • Utilizes delegated authorities under the GAC ODA (Engineering Authorized Representative, Alternate Administrator, etc.) as applicable.

  • Participates in FCAA validation activities and reviews of deliverables as a SME.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:
  • Broad expertise or unique specialized knowledge in certification.

  • In-depth knowledge of FAA Orders 8110.4, 8100.15, and Gulfstream ODA Procedures Manual.

  • Understands GAC safety system.
