Shelby Humane is seeking dedicated, responsible people who love animals and want to help us save their lives by taking good care of them until they can find a forever home.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for feeding, cleaning, and caring for dogs and cats in the shelter.
  • Complete daily cleaning routines and maintain your assigned areas.
  • Monitor the health of shelter animals and follow established procedures for sick and/or injured animals.
  • Monitor animals’ temperament/behavior.
  • Ensure animals receive daily exercise and baths as needed.
  • Provide kennel enrichment and socialization for animals as time permits.
  • Follow Shelby Humane guidelines, policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management, and the public.
  • Foster positive relationships with the public, volunteers, and staff.
  • Treat all animals humanely and with compassion at all times.
  • Supervise and assist volunteers as needed.
  • Assist the Canine or Feline Shift Leaders with their duties and responsibilities.
  • Shelby Humane is open seven days a week, 365 days a year including holidays.
  • Kennel Staff is required to work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.

Required Education, Experience & Knowledge

  • Must have a genuine interest in the wellbeing and care of animals.
  • Previous experience in the animal care, healthcare, custodial or janitorial fields a plus.
  • Must be diligent, detailed oriented, and a team player.
  • High School Diploma strongly preferred.

Working Environment
Possible exposure to infectious organisms, animal waste, allergens, chemical materials requiring OSHA Material Safety Datasheets, and potential hostile animals. Exposure to hot, cold and wet weather conditions. The noise level is generally loud.

Physical Demands
Individual will be required to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 pounds to waist height throughout a normal workday.
