BASIC FUNCTION:
The Howard University Moorland-Spingarn Research Center has begun its Black Press Archives Digitization Project. The Center’s newspaper collection, the Black Press Archives, represents more than 2,000 newspaper titles from the United States, Africa, and the African Diaspora, including the legendary Chicago Defender, New York Amsterdam News, Los Angeles Sentinel, Washington Afro-American, Nigeria’s Anglo African, The Bomb from Trinidad and Tobago, and Le Soir from Haiti. It is eagerly sought by visiting scholars and graduate students. It has more than 100,000 individual issues of newspapers. The collection includes complete files of Black papers, as well as the records of Black editors, publishers, and journalists. The Black Press Archives Digitization project will digitally preserve the rich history of the global Black experience for research and access for years to come.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
None.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Establish protocols for digitization.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Advisor and Librarian to develop metadata. guidelines that optimize resource discovery and online access.
  • Create and administer the database of digital materials, related systems management.
  • Learn and comply with FADGI federal guidelines.
  • Learn and comply with Preservica software guidelines Digitize archival materials.
  • Collaborate with the Archives team to scan more than 3,000 archival materials, including physical papers, press publications, and microfilm, using scanners and digital cameras, according to established protocols and specifications. Collaborate with the Archives team to perform data entry of metadata and related dates, authors, publishers, titles, filenames, directory structures, and other conventions.
  • Process digital files and associated metadata in appropriate locations on servers and software.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews of staff work before approving for publishing online, ensuring clarity, completeness, and accuracy of metadata.
  • Follow protocols for correcting or significantly altering digital catalog Develop the Black Press Archives long-term.
  • Create and manage technical resources and guiding documentation to track protocols for internal training purposes.
  • Apply knowledge of protocols to respond to digital maintenance issues.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Knowledge of digitizing and scanning protocols
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and digital image editing software
  • Strong attention to detail and organization accuracy with recordkeeping Troubleshooting and problem-solving expertise
  • Demonstrated initiative to work self-directed yet with a collaborative style Demonstrated ability to train and supervise part-time staff and students
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum 2 years of experience working with digital files and data management
