POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of Operations Support, the Area Approvals/Material Management Manager is responsible for managing waste approval activities related to the Area’s environmental permits, and health and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies. The Area Approvals/Material Management Manager – RIES collaborates with Operations to develop strategies for management of outbound and direct shipments to third party disposal facilities; develops and implements processes that provide timely, compliant, and accurate waste approvals across the organization, as well as standard operating procedures, audit programs, and metrics to measure and enhance performance; and monitors regulatory development and ensures appropriate staff are knowledgeable of the company’s environmental regulatory obligations. The incumbent will work closely with internal and external resources to provide guidance on regulatory interpretations and promote common understanding of regulations across the organization..
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Partners with operations management to develop solutions for achieving business and compliance goals.
- Oversees and organizes inbound and outbound waste approvals for the Area.
- Coordinates with customer service, site personnel, and management as needed to ensure all contract deadlines are met.
- Develops, implements, and oversees data management systems for collecting and tracking data.
- Provides regulatory interpretation guidance to operations to support consistent implementation of federal, state and local environmental regulatory requirements as they pertain to waste approvals.
- Develops compliance solutions in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.
- Recommends annual area waste approval goals, objectives and KPIs.
- Drives knowledge throughout the Area by providing targeted training and consultations that support program goals.
- Develops, implements, and oversees systems for communicating program changes/updates.
- Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency.
- Participates in strategic planning to sustain and grow programs and services.
- Identifies testing requirements and promptly identifies and communicates deficiencies.
- Monitors and validates that waste approvals processes are conducted within established company guidelines.
- Monitors waste profile data management practices and ensures appropriate records are maintained.
- Provides reports to executive management on program performance.
- Takes the lead in negotiating pricing with disposal and recycling vendors, utilizing the help of Purchasing and strategic sourcing.
- Ensures the best transportation rates for outbound wastes.
- Provides technical support to the sales, customer service, operations and other departments.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to lead a team of managers, specialists and technicians, managing an environmental compliance program for the area that involves diverse and complex environmental requirements and compliance obligations.
- Knowledge of recycling and disposal outlets, including pricing, acceptance criteria, scheduling, and compliance history.
- Skill to read, analyze and interpret complex rules and regulations, financial data, professional journals and technical procedures.
- Skill writing reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
- Ability to work complex mathematical and chemistry concepts using fundamental scientific methods in a variety of practical, variable and non-standards situations.
- Ability to direct or conduct complex data analysis with a high proficiency using Excel and other equivalent data management tools.
- Persuasive and highly effective at communicating, internally and externally, insights and recommended business direction.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or related science. (required)
- Ten or more years of progressively responsible experience implementing waste approval programs (required).
