Williams College seeks an experienced accounting professional to join our Finance team as Assistant Controller. This newly created role will serve as a leader supporting all accounting functions and the fiscal operations of the college.

Under the direction of the Controller, the Assistant Controller will help transform workflows and business processes for a better user experience, accuracy and access to information, and financial efficiency. The college is in the early phases of a new enterprise system implementation. It is an exciting opportunity to partner in the evaluation of technology, configure systems, lead process improvement, and support community training in the change.

Essential functions of the role include but are not limited to general accounting, financial reporting, tax and compliance reporting, financial operations management, as well as capital projects and assets accounting.


Responsibilities


  • This includes all general accounting processes, financial close, internal and external reporting, audit, tax, and compliance filings. Manage monthly closing processes, fixed assets and capital project accounting, debt, and tax and compliance filings.
  • Supervise team members, serve as a mentor in accounting principles and processes, and as a resource to the Williams community.
  • Serve as a leader for the annual audits (financial statement, Uniform Guidance, etc.) and manage the preparation of supporting materials.
  • Evaluate, implement, and supervise monthly and quarterly closing processes. Prepare and review supporting schedules, including planning, directing, and coordinating the activities of several departments. Reconcile and review the account reconciliations completed by others.
  • Assist in the evaluation, enhancement, and implementation of general accounting policies for the college. Interpret and provide guidance to members of the community on policies, collaborating regularly with other campus offices
  • Partner in all areas of accounting and process, including investments, gifts, payroll, accounts payable, inventory, internal allocations, budget reporting, and banking functions.
  • Monitor changes in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and assess their application to Williams. Support the preparation of the year-end financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Produce interim financial statements and related financial reports for review with senior management and area managers. Support the annual and interim budget and financial planning process.
  • Support/lead the preparation of required reports and surveys required by regulatory agencies and others (e.g. IPEDS, FISAP, and NACUBO).
  • Serve as the Capital Projects and Assets lead in Workday.
  • Supporting enhancements in procurement, accounting, and reporting processes for construction and capital activities.
  • Supervise the capital project process and the accounting for fixed assets. Review and approve reconciliations, the creation and funding of new projects, and related accounting.
  • Partner in the setting and monitoring of the capital budget.
  • Collaborate with the Planning Design and Construction team in creating and evaluating capital projects.
  • Support the treasury operations. Collaborate with project managers to forecast cash requirements for capital projects.
  • Serve as a collaborative partner and resource to the Williams community.


Qualifications


  • A bachelor's degree plus five or more years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree and/or CPA preferred.
  • Strong technical accounting skills and knowledge of accounting standards. Experience with compliance requirements and filings for not-for-profit entities (e.g. Form 990, Form 990-T, MA Form PC, etc.).
  • Excellent customer service, leadership, and management skills.

  • Experience working with complex enterprise systems.
  • A willingness to embrace and lead change and improvement.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills with keen attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong quantitative skills; good judgment, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong technology skills, advanced MS Excel and proficiency with relational database technology.

This role is based primarily on campus.

Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Pay range is from $100,000 to $120,000, commensurate with experience. Job band 2-C.
