ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THERAPEUTIC RECREATION

Blythedale Children’s Hospital seeks an Assistant Director of Therapeutic Recreation who will assume a leadership role on the Therapeutic Recreation teams, both inpatient and on our Long-Term Care Unit. This role will also assume the role of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and the clinical responsibilities involved with Therapeutic Recreation programming for patients and families. Assistant Director will also be responsible for ensuring program and care plans for the residents on the Long-Term Care unit are facilitated within guidelines identified by NYSDOH and CMS. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for charting and updating resident cares plans in accordance with regulatory guidelines and responsibilities. In addition to clinical care provided to children and families, the Assistant Director will also support, organize, and coordinate the daily programming and overall goals of the Department, under the direction and supervision of the Director of Therapeutic and Developmental Support services. Part of this organization includes the direct clinical supervision of staff within the Department. While engaging in clinical Therapeutic Recreation practices and the leadership role above, the Assistant Director will also maintain the vision, mission and initiatives of the Hospital at large, and be an active member of Hospital-wide experiences, discussions and interdisciplinary committees and events. This role also encompasses the responsibility of development, coordination and supervision of Internship for Therapeutic Recreation Students. Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm.

JOB DESCRIPTION

· Effectively communicates objectives and scope of services provided by the department.

· Develops; participates in and continually reviews/assesses LTC therapeutic and developmental services and activities. Recommends and implements appropriate changes to the TR program to support and meet resident needs as well as the hospital goals mission and vision.

· Develops and facilitate seasonal celebrations.

· Ensures that all policies, procedures and systems are in compliance with NYSDOH, CMS, and other regulatory agency standards.

· Tracks each patient’s attendance at TR Programs.

· Evaluates documentation standards and any changes needed including information for the MDS.

· In collaboration with and under the guidance of the Director of TDSS, Analyzes problems effectively and takes appropriate action to resolve issues.

· Competently directs, organizes, and participates in Developmental and Therapeutic programming/services in accordance with the scope of services offered by the department.

· Possesses effective oral communication skills and demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with other hospital disciplines and outside consultants.

· Ensures that departmental services and activities are continually assessed and initiates appropriate changes to improve performance.

·Ensures that information is shared with department staff and Director of TDSS on a continual basis and fosters an environment of open communication and collaboration.

· In collaboration with and under the guidance of the Director of TDSS, effectively counsels staff with respect to job performance/work attitude and formulates appropriate corrective action plan.

· Fosters an environment of continuing education for self and department staff.

· Through participation in, monitors and evaluates night and weekend programs and adjusts programming as needed to meet the needs of residents, families and the alignment with organization goals.

· Works with parent and caregiver to develop program appropriate to the resident needs and development.

· Participates in program development that is in alignment with or supported by clinical research and evidenced based best practices for our LTC pediatric population.

· In collaboration with and under the guidance of the Director of TDSS, manages the schedule; time and attendance and pay roll for the TR staff.

· In collaboration with and under the guidance of the Director of TDSS, completes annual performance evaluations on the LTC TR staff.

· In collaboration with and under the guidance of the Director of TDSS, may be assigned additional managerial duties as needed.

Requirements:

· Educational Bachelor’s in Therapeutic Recreation/Recreation Therapy and hold active certification by the NCTRC.

· Experience. At least 2+ years’ experience as a CTRS within a pediatric setting; Long Term Care and Supervisory experience preferred.

· Physical Demands/Working Conditions Standing, walking, stooping. Ability to transfer children and equipment. Ability to meet flexible scheduling demands and patient care needs.
