The UAS Sitka Campus invites applications for a tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor of Art to begin in Fall 2023. The Art program is housed in a multi-use studio with an emphasis in ceramics including glazing lab and a variety of kilns. Additionally, this position is involved in collaborative efforts to strengthen the Northwest Coast Indigenous Arts program throughout the region. This is a full-time, 9-month, exempt tenure track faculty position, complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
100Teach Art program curriculum including ceramics, sculpture, drawing and painting, art history, and art appreciation. Courses may be delivered face-to-face, online, or hybrid. Assess student progress in meeting course and program learning outcomes. Additional duties include oversight of studio / lab space and equipment, course development, textbook/course materials selection, mentoring students, and participating in program development/expansion efforts. Maintain currency in disciplinary subject matter, methodology, and pedagogy. Prepare for and participate in traditional academic functions. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Commitment to student-centered learning, student engagement and teaching excellence
Knowledge and familiarity of the Northwest Coast Indigenous Arts community of artists and expertise in the region
Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
Experience with student evaluation and outcomes assessment
Proficient computer skills related to teaching, communication, and discipline
Interpersonal skills necessary to engage effectively and professionally with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and the public
Ability to teach effectively in an online/distance or blended/hybrid learning environment
Ability to work effectively in a faculty team, as well as function independently
Ability to work with community partners such as arts agencies, tribal organizations, and school districts to collaborate on community-based education needs
Ability to advocate for the university
Ability to travel
Preferred Experience:
- Academic teaching experience
Required Education or Training:
- Master’s degree in relevant field required, MFA preferred
- Experience working with foundry, kiln, and glazing operations (electric and gas)
- Experience in organizing, managing, and directing projects as part of a collaborative professional team
- Experience working with Alaska Native cultures and rural communities.
