Job description
The Department of Art at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applications for two full-time, tenure track positions at assistant professor level, one each in Painting and Printmaking, respectively. These are nine month appointments beginning August 2023. The Department of Art is currently restructuring the 2D area, and the two successful candidates will collaborate with one another to re-envision how practices of drawing can support the curricula in painting and printmaking. We are interested in colleagues who synthesize technical and conceptual skills across diverse disciplinary approaches.
The Department of Art seeks to recruit faculty members dedicated to cultivating critical dialogue and equity within an interdisciplinary arts community. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity and improving access for diverse and underrepresented student groups which are integral to the department and university’s mission. Additionally, the successful candidates have practice and pedagogy that challenge the disciplinary conventions of painting, printmaking, and/or drawing through critical investigations into context, including post-medium strategies. Candidates who address critical themes in their artistic practice and pedagogy—including but not limited to issues of identity, power, social justice, postcolonialism, diaspora, liberation—are highly desirable.
MSU Denver offers both a B.A. and a B.F.A. in Art as well as a B.F.A. in Art Education, a B.F.A. in Communication Design, and a B.A. in Art History, Theory, and Criticism. The Department of Art at MSU Denver is NASAD accredited and currently offers study in interdisciplinary artistic practices as well as media-specific coursework in ceramics, drawing, jewelry design and metalsmithing, painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. MSU Denver and the Department of Art are committed to active and strategic initiatives in our work toward educational equity and promoting a culture of access and inclusion for our students, staff, and faculty. We seek to sustain an inclusive community where all individuals at MSU Denver and in the Department of Art are respected, feel a sense of belonging, and are provided proper resources and skillsets to be successful. This success is not limited to our liberal arts and sciences focused education, but also to the broader development of our students as engaged citizens and valued contributors to their discipline, the community, and our society.
At MSU Denver, we recognize the value of everyone and every group as part of an inclusive community of belonging. The College of Letters, Arts and Sciences has a vibrant Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement that highlights those values. Differences can include but are not limited to culture, race, ethnicity, color, national origin, language, sex, physical appearance, pregnancy, marital/partner status, age, (dis)ability, neurodiversity, creed, religious or spiritual beliefs, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, class, education, gender identity/expression, veteran status, political affiliation, political philosophy, and more. We recognize that these differences can be visible or invisible.
MSU Denver is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented and historically minoritized groups. Our Fall 2021 student population consists of over 57% first-generation students and over 50% students of color. We are a designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) located in downtown Denver. As the third largest institution of higher education in Colorado and the only institution with an open access mission, MSU Denver is a model university for today’s college students. The University serves the most diverse undergraduate student population in the state, as well as the most first-generation students and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals students.
