Sheakley Workforce Management Services is currently seeking a Safety Manager for a position in Portsmouth, VA. Our client is one of the nation's leading contracting firms. The client wants to start this out as a 1099-contract position. However, depending on performance, the client ideally wants to find the right person for the long-term opportunity with full benefits.

The client ideally wants people with heavy marine, diving, heavy crane operations, and marine construction but safety qualifications are important too. For lower pay positions (JD Assistant Safety Director) they want a minimum of 5 years of experience. Higher pay (Safety Director) looking for 10-15 years with CSP and has been around construction.


Summary:

The Assistant Safety Director will assist in the coordination and implementation of occupational health policies and procedures to promote and ensure effective safety operations in the organization.

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Promote business health and safety policies and risk management guidelines. Safety Initiatives & Vision, Safety Loss Control, Safety Culture, Safety Reporting
  • Maintain safety procedure manuals, OSHA and Construction industry standards
  • Ensure OSHA, ANSI, NFPA and (NAVSEA?) legal and industry compliance
  • Maintain procedural lists and documents for safety
  • Coordinate and deliver mass educational briefings focused on occupational accident trends and prevention
  • Advise the use of safety equipment
  • Inspect facilities for adherence to fire, hazard, and safety guidelines
  • Investigate industrial accidents, injuries or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures
  • Coordinate and deliver mass educational briefings focused on occupational accident trends and prevention
  • Perform regular safety hazard assessments to reduce risks and promote positive behaviors at all levels.
  • Work closely with EHS Manager and Project Manager to maintain optimum levels of communication to effectively and efficiently complete projects.
  • Onboard new employees, including training, mentoring, and new hire documentation to maximize effectiveness
  • Report employee safety concerns
  • Conduct safety and risk audits of work practices and processes
  • Work daily with operations to assess associated risks of operations
  • Ensure Health and Safety and Environmental protocols are being followed
  • Understand operational characteristics of business and promote safety directives Monitor and report all incidents
  • Investigate industrial accidents, injuries or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures
  • Promote the attainment of safety goals and plans
  • Coordinate employee injuries and light duty
  • Maintain SDS
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 3years of occupational health and safety experience in a maritime construction environment is required.
  • 5 years of experience in lieu of a degree

  • ASP Certification
  • LSP, CHST Certifications desired
  • Must have Intimate knowledge of OSHA, Environmental law
  • Must have Intimate knowledge of Health and Safety State and Federal laws
  • Shipyard Competent Person
  • First Aid/ CPR/ AED
  • OSHA 5410 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Maritime Industry OSHA HAZWOPER 40 + 8
  • OSHA 3095 Electrical Standards
  • Certified Forklift Operator
  • Certified Confined Space Attendant
  • Certified Fire Watch and PAI
  • OSHA 521 Guide to Industrial Hygiene
  • OSHA 3115 Fall Protection
  • Cableway Inspection and Repair Course
  • 30-Hour Construction Safety and Health

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • May require travel.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction and marine site dangers.
  • Must be on-call to address incidents, injuries, emergencies, bad weather, and other issues at the jobsite.
