Museum of the Rockies seeks an experienced, trustworthy, and team-oriented Security and Building Assistant Manager. The Assistant Manager is responsible for supervising and coordinating a Security Team and assisting in security and facility operations. The Assistant Manager works under the direct supervision of the Security and Building Operations Manager to create a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors, staff, exhibits, and collections. The Assistant Manager will be professional and responsible individual who supports the management of daily security and facility operations of the museum and works toward ensuring coordination with the Security and Building Operations Manager.Museum of the Rockies (MOR) is Montana’s most visited museum and top ten Montana tourist destinations. In 2022, the museum anticipates serving over 230,000 general visitors and thousands of program participants. MOR is a college-level division of Montana State University, an independent 501©(3) organization, a Smithsonian Affiliate, an accredited AAM museum, and a repository for state and federal fossils. The interdisciplinary museum has one of the finest collections of paleontology in the world and a significant cultural collection from the Northern Rocky region. Located on a 22-acre museum site, it includes a 120,000-square-foot-facility, the state-of-the-art Taylor Planetarium, the 240 seat Hager Auditorium, Martin Children’s Discovery Center, and Living History Farm, along with an off-site 553-acre paleontology preserve.
Duties and Responsibilities
Proactively Ensure Safety
Directly supports the Security and Building Operations Manager with Security and Building Operations
Assist in managing, training, and developing the Security staff effectively to create a healthy and safe museum environment
Assists with budgetary requests, analysis, and reporting
Protect the Museum through proactive prevention including alarm systems, video monitoring, and on-site patrol to prevent vandalism and theft, and to control access to staff areas including the lab and collections
Work with Security contractor and MOR Exhibits team to adjust and install cameras and alarms for all exhibits as needed
Document and actively manage security access for all MOR staff
Have expert knowledge of and have accessible the Collections Policies & Procedures
Enforce security policies and procedures with all staff, contractors, and visitors
Continually provides a visual security presence by patrolling the interior, exterior and perimeter of MOR while on duty and promptly respond to any alarms
Provides excellent customer service and assists visitors and patrons of the Museum by providing direction to various parts of the building, or grounds, answering general questions, etc.
Investigate incidents and complete reports. May include communicating with MSU Police, Bozeman Fire Department, MSU Safety & Risk Management, MSU Facilities Services, and Federal and State Agencies
Alert appropriate staff of any policy violations and emergencies
Be on 24-hour call as assigned to respond to problems and emergencies outside of normal shift times. This position is the first responder to Museum emergencies including medical emergencies, accidents, conflict, crime, and fire
Required to work alone and unsupervised during nights, weekends, and holidays (including Thanksgiving and Christmas)
Perform other Security and Facility Operations as needed or assigned
Update Security Policies & Procedures and Provide Training
Keep all security policies and procedures up-to-date and easily accessible to appropriate staff
Make recommendations on changes in security procedures to the Security and Building Operations Manager and the MOR Security Committee
Coordinate in-service safety training regarding fire response, chemical “Right to Know”, and other assigned safety topics
Assist in planning and implementing emergency preparedness program
Knowledge of Collections Policy and Procedures
Develop and conduct in-service training to include CPR, AED, First Aid training to Security and Museum staff
Have knowledge of the principles of effective training
Supervise Security Staff
In the absence of the Security and Building Operations Manager, serve as the acting manager of the Security and Facility Operations
Supervise and train professional, student, and volunteer security personnel. Recruit and hire new security personnel as needed
Evaluate performance of security team; discipline as needed in coordination with MSU Human Resources
Prepare and manage shift assignments to ensure security coverage for all open hours and after-hours events
Assist with and help with schedule the day-to-day Security Team activities and special events acting as the lead Security Officer
Manage after hour event Security needs
Accurately maintain daily logs, written reports, and cash exchanges
Building Operations
Assists in ensuring the Museum complies with all statutory requirements related to building security, health, and safety, including but not limited to, OSHA, Building, Fire, and ADA regulations
Assist Building Operations Manager in keeping the buildings and grounds up to standards for health and safety (e.g., proper height of fire extinguishers, room capacities), work with MSU Facilities Services to report issues
Assists in ensuring that the facility and grounds are clean and maintained according to policy and procedures
Assist in coordinating drills and safety inspections; ensure staff knowledge and adherence to “Right to Know” Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) safety procedures
Assist in overseeing any renovations, refurbishments, and building projects
Assist the Security and Building and Operations manager to proactively assess and recommend improvements that are aligned to the Security and Facility Budget to improve Safety
Assist in investigating and documenting safety violations, report to supervisor or proper authority
Drafting maintenance reports
Inspects repairs and signs off on work order repairs that the work is completed satisfactorily
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Bachelor’s Degree in field relevant to the position and/or work environment or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
Strong supervisory experience in security or law enforcement or related field
Knowledge of a diverse range of security equipment, devices, and protective procedures and activities, including highly specialized operating requirements, methods, and procedures to protect buildings, access control, collection, staff members and visitors
Demonstrate experience in emergency reporting and response planning
Experience in customer service and handling cash and valuables
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Proven experience as a security manager, law enforcement, or similar position
Robust facility and customer management experience
Strong leadership and communication skills
Experience working in a museum environment including an understanding of collections and exhibit care
Experience working with security systems including video monitoring and alarm systems
Experience training security and non-security staff
Experience in customer service, security, and/or hospitality
Certification in Basic First Aid, AED, and CPR Training
The Successful Candidate Will

Have an ability to work under direct supervision, alone, or within a team
Prepare clear and concise written reports and be capable of verbally reporting incidents
Maintain good working relationships with MOR staff as well as outside departments and agencies
