Under supervision of the VP of Transportation and direct report Underwriter, and within guidelines and authority established between MGU and various contracted carriers, the Assistant Underwriter performs account set-up, initial risk review, open/missing item broker follow-up, binding of accounts and mid-term policy changes/processing of endorsements. Reviews endorsement requests on behalf of broker. This position requires a great deal of organization, communication and multi-tasking.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Initial account set-up and review for endorsements, renewals, and new as assigned by their manager. Lines of business to review include general liability, auto liability (incl. HNO), physical damage, umbrella/excess, property, crime, motor truck cargo, contingent auto and cargo, etc…
  • Prepare the initial file work-up on renewal and new business policies. Such work-up to include but is not limited to: review and verification for minimum submission requirements as identified by manager, MVR review and documentation, as applicable, identification of potential account referral to carrier, effectively communicate to broker missing items needed to proceed
  • Provide customer service by responding promptly and courteously to all requests for status updates and information
  • Process bind requests and verify open and/or missing items have been received or noted in file
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and issuance of policies, as identified and delegated by the manager
  • Review, rate and process mid-term policy endorsement requests, as applicable within delegated authority
  • Effectively communicate company standards, mission and submission requirements to brokers
  • Provide accurate documentation in the file and/or in electronic notes, of broker communication
  • Order/review inspection reports, as assigned by manager
  • Actively interact with assigned brokers and agents, on an account-by-account basis, as required
  • Ensure that information available from internal and external resources is properly prepared for final underwriting review
  • Participates in cross-training with other team members as required

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in multi-line commercial insurance environment required
  • Prior experience working remotely from a home office 100% of the time is required, should applicant not be local to the Greater Cleveland area and/or not able to commute daily to local office
  • Results-oriented, self-motivated problem solver with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload with little supervision and efficiently make sound business decisions within level of authority, as applicable
  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks in response to both written and verbal requests
  • PC literate. Basic to intermediate skills with Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Candidate should possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and sharp attention to detail. This includes strong documentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate with other staff members and external constituents
  • Must have adequate vision (with corrective lenses if needed) to clearly view computer screen
  • Must have adequate hearing to perform job tasks
