Job description
Under the direction of the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of students, The Associate Dean will serve on the Student Life leadership team and President’s Cabinet, and work collaboratively with College constituents to advance the institution’s commitment to all aspects of diversity and inclusion that are essential to student success and furthering a sense of belonging for all students. The Associate Dean will work closely on diversity initiatives within Student Life to champion diversity and inclusion best practices.
The Associate Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion will bring a collaborative vision and provide leadership in the development, coordination and implementation of a comprehensive program relative to an intercultural approach to diversity and inclusion programming, training, mentoring and support to Ringling College’s multicultural, international, LGBTQ, First Generation and Veteran students, as historically underrepresented populations.
The Associate Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion will lead the Student Life diversity and inclusion program by managing the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. The Associate Dean will work closely with the other Student Life Associate Deans, Director of International Affairs, Student Access Services and Veteran Student Affairs to provide a partnership approach to identify-based resources and support. The Associate Dean will provide individual mentorship to students from historically underrepresented identities and backgrounds including, but not limited to students of color, international students, first generation students, Veteran’s, students with disabilities and LGBTQ+ students. The Associate Dean will develop and implement professional training programs on diversity and inclusion for student leaders and the Student Life and Student Care Teams. The Associate Dean will establish themselves among students, faculty and staff as one of the primary resources for students to find individualized support and guidance; creating educational opportunities that allow students to wrestle with issues of diversity and inclusion in challenging and supportive environments.

Demonstration of a supportive and accessible leadership/management style and willingness to collaborate with students, faculty and staff; the proven capacity to build meaningful and effective relationships at all levels of an organization.
- Ability to be a good listener who can understand issues from multiple viewpoints, respond appropriately, and facilitate shared understanding among diverse individuals and groups.
- Documented history of successfully developing and advancing diversity and inclusion programs.
- In depth knowledge of theory and practice of diversity and inclusion, cultural awareness, sexuality and gender identity, intersectionality of identity in college student development in a global context, and intercultural concepts and issues as they apply within higher education.
- Ability to negotiate courageously the complex issues that emerge at the intersection of art, expression and creative making in terms of diversity and inclusion.
- Scholarly expertise in intercultural education in higher education.
- Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws as well as knowledge of higher education compliance regulations, particularly Title VI, Title IX and Section 504.
- Comfort and sophistication with data and analytical tools that support decision making.
- Experience with program evaluation, assessment and learning outcomes.
- An understanding of best practices in recruitment and retention of underrepresented students.
- Knowledge of grant application processes.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and budget management skills.
- Personal demeanor that inspires excellence, engagement and collaboration.
- An appreciation and commitment to art and design education.
Minimum Qualifications
- An earned Master’s Degree in student development, higher education administration, or related field.
- Five years of related experience within higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
- An earned doctorate (or in process) in student development, higher education administration or related field.
- Six or more years of experience in Higher Education with time at the Director or equivalent level or above.
- Evidence of education and professional development specifically focused in the area of diversity and inclusion (relevant degrees, dissertation, thesis, certifications, professional association leadership role(s), etc.)
