Federal agencies must provide reasonable accommodation to applicants with disabilities where appropriate. Please contact us if you require a reasonable accommodation for any part of the application or hiring process. Determinations on requests for reasonable accommodation will be made on a case-by-case basis. A reasonable accommodation is any change to a job, the work environment, or the way things are usually done that enables an individual with a disability to apply for a job, perform job duties or receive equal access to job benefits.
Under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, federal agencies must provide reasonable accommodations when:
- An applicant with a disability needs an accommodation to have an equal opportunity to apply for a job.
- An employee with a disability needs an accommodation to perform the essential job duties or to gain access to the workplace.
- An employee with a disability needs an accommodation to receive equal access to benefits, such as details, training, and office-sponsored events.
Learn more about disability employment and reasonable accommodations or how to contact an agency. Entitlement to accommodation is dependent on an employee meeting the criteria of a "qualified individual with a disability" under the ADA. The ADA defines a "qualified individual with a disability" as a person having a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities (i.e., activities an average person would be able to perform, such as caring for one's self, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, or working). Furthermore, the accommodation that is requested must be of a nature that would enable an applicant or employee to perform the essential functions of the position and remain productively employed. To meet the criteria of a "qualified individual with a disability" the employee must be able to perform the essential duties of the position either with or without accommodation. Employees who do not meet the definition of a "qualified individual with a disability" under the ADA do not have a specific entitlement to accommodation.
