Job description

We’re looking for someone with experience in planning wide-ranging public programs and fun events that will strengthen our community of passionate teachers. No classroom experience is required, but a passion for our mission is.

The Academy for Teachers honors and supports teachers through world-class learning experiences that inspire them to continue changing lives, in the classroom and beyond. We offer an impressive array of programs and activities—a bit like the 92nd Street Y, but for teachers—that bring together teachers who are eager to learn alongside, and from, like-minded educators.

The Associate Director for Creative Programming & Community works in the following areas:

  • Master Classes. The master class is the Academy’s signature program and brings public, charter, and private school teachers together with leading experts and artists for a day of learning, inspiration, and a sharing of best practices. Master classes have been led by Jane Goodall, Gloria Steinem, Brian Greene, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Michael Cunningham, Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Greenblatt, Mike Birbiglia, Roz Chast, and Emily Wilson, as well as less-famous leading academics and experts.
  • Special Events. This series includes high-profile lectures, panel discussions, readings, music and dance programs with major artists, play buy-outs, stand-up nights, etc. Past special events include concerts by the Kronos Quartet, Meredith Monk, readings by Poets Laureate Billy Collins and Tracy K Smith, a lecture by Brian Green, a magic show with, and a stand-up night.
  • Community Activities. We bring teachers together around a shared interest, as with our book and writing groups, our softball team, and our chorus. We also showcase the creative work of our Fellows through readings, a Fellows music festival, art show, etc.
  • Partnerships. The Academy partners with cultural and academic institutions, which host our programs and give us other kinds of support.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Design and run roughly half of our Master Classes, working in partnership with the Associate Director of Creative Programming & the Early Career Fellowship.
  • Primary responsibility for Special Events.
  • Primary responsibility for facilitating and developing Community Activities.
  • Oversee Don Quixote Fellowship and Flash Fiction contest.
  • Nurture and develop institutional partnerships.
  • Oversee deadlines, plan budgets.
  • Manage program facilitators.
  • Organize outreach and marketing to publicize our programs and ensure they are well attended.
  • Support other programs as needed.
  • Create program evaluation metrics regarding recruitment and attendance, program success, teacher satisfaction, etc.
  • Oversee program review and implement improvements.

This is a full-time position, part remote, part in-person. You must live in the city, or very close by. Most of our special events and community activities take place in the late afternoon and early evening. There will also be occasional weekend responsibilities.

We are looking for the following qualities:

  • A passion for our mission.
  • Efficiency and perfectionism.
  • A collaborative nature and a sense of humor.
  • An ability to work independently—a self-starter.
  • Excellent writing skills and a horror of education jargon.
  • Good graphic design and marketing skills are a plus.
  • Technical Knowledge: Intermediate/Advanced knowledge of Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, etc.) Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and collaboration tools (Zoom, Teams).
  • Enough comfort with technology to learn how to use our database (Salesforce) and other platforms (FormAssembly, Mailchimp, etc.)

Minimum education/experience required:

Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) and experience creating, promoting, and running a wide range of public events.

Salary and Benefits:

$75,000 - $85,000, based on experience. Great benefits, including:

  • Three weeks paid vacation
  • Thirteen additional paid holidays
  • 401K with a generous 6% employer contribution
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance (80% employer contribution).

To apply, please submit a cover letter and a resume (in a single PDF) to: info@academyforteachers.org.
