JobSummary: Union Square & Co. seeks an Associate Editor to join our growing Classics team. Union Square & Co.’s classics program combines an extensive backlist with inventive product lines and an enterprising approach to formats and licensing possibilities. Union Square & Co.’s diverse list showcases top-tier talent and brands and gives space to unique perspectives and strong voices. It features classic literature, fiction, narrative nonfiction, food & drink, decorating, health, wellness, and pop culture.

The Associate Editor will work with the Executive Editor, Classics and play a key part in reimagining and extending the adult and children's classic lines. They will be expected to think creatively about what constitutes a classic in a rapidly changing publishing landscape, explore Union Square’s existing backlist for repackaging opportunities, and generate ideas for the illustrated and proprietary classics lines.

This role offers career growth at one of the most extensive classic programs in the publishing industry, a hands-on approach to reissuing treasured classic texts, and a chance to showcase a more inclusive and diverse vision of the literary canon. The ideal candidate will blend attention to detail with a flair for big-picture thinking and a deep love of reading classics.

The Associate Editor will be responsible for reviewing manuscripts and proofs; attending editorial and span meetings as needed; preparing essential paperwork such as contract requests and title information sheets; and tracking important deadlines through the publishing process. In total, they will be responsible for approximately 15-30 classics titles per year. Experience with book packaging, children's publishing, or large literary estates is a plus, though not required for the role.

An employee in this position can expect an annual starting rate between $60,000 and $70,000. This is a hybrid role requiring 2-3 days in our headquarters at Union Square, NYC.

WhatYouDo:
  • Work closely with Editorial and Sales to assess classics and backlist and pitch titles to our proprietary team
  • Review proposals, manuscripts, and proofs while adhering to production schedules/deadlines
  • Research comparative sales data and market trends
  • Research artists and designers for illustrated classics, both trade and proprietary
  • Draft catalog, jacket, and web copy as well as title information sheets
  • Prepare and traffic essential paperwork, such as P&Ls and contract requests
  • Collaborate across all in-house departments (publicity, marketing, sales, production, design, etc.)
Knowledge&Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 2 years' relevant experience required
  • Deep enthusiasm for traditional “classic” literature as well as genre literature (mystery, romance, science fiction, fantasy, etc.)
  • Ability to identify consumer trends through analysis of data and research
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Careful attention to detail and timely follow-up, both internally and externally
  • Ability to work both independently and with team
  • Creative problem solving, decision making, and time management
