Promotion Provisional Opportunity - Current qualified employee of the New York State Department of Health with one year of permanent or contingent- permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Senior Radiological Health Specialist.
Public Provisional Open Competitive Opportunity - Minimum Qualifications: You must have Either 1. a bachelor's degree or higher in health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, AND three years in radiation protection which includes experience dealing with radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment. Experience limited to imaging patients is NOT qualifying.
Or 2. a bachelor's degree or higher in any area including or supplemented by 30 college semester credit hours in one or more of the following subject areas: health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, AND three years in radiation protection which includes experience dealing with radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment. Experience limited to imaging patients is NOT qualifying.
Substitution: An advanced degree in health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, may be substituted for the required work experience as follows: master's degree: one year or doctoral degree: two years.
- If your bachelor's degree or higher is not in one of the areas listed above in the minimum qualifications, but you qualify by having 30 semester credit hours in any combination of those subject areas, you MUST submit a copy of your transcript(s) or a course list which includes the name of the college or university, course title, date received (or expected), and number of semester credits received per course.
If there are three or fewer qualified candidates interested in appointment to this position, a permanent appointment may be made pursuant to Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law. To be eligible, candidates must be an employee of the Department of Health and have one year of permanent competitive service as a Senior Radiological Health Specialist. "
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have experience in radiation protection including knowledge of, and experience applying, both State and federal standards for protection from ionizing radiation. They will have familiarity with the uses of radiation producing equipment and radioactive materials used for medical, academic, and commercial purposes; inspection and investigative experience; the ability to analyze written and published program material and draw conclusions concerning its impact; the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; the ability to manage multiple priorities and handle a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment; experience in project management; and advanced computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
"This Associate Radiological Health Specialist (ARHS), Grade 23, is responsible for conducting mandatory public health inspections of facilities that use radioactive materials and x-ray producing equipment; investigating allegations of misconduct by DOH Licensed Radiologic Technologists; responding to accidents/incidents involving radioactive materials including medical events, transportation accidents, damaged industrial gauges, etc.; evaluating radiologically contaminated sites; and responding to incidents at nuclear power plants.
Currently, there are numerous radioactive material facilities overdue for a public health inspection as well as a backlog of investigations that must be performed. There are radiologically contaminated sites that require public health oversight and staff are typically assigned to a few specific sites to monitor and review. Job duties will include supervision, considerable travel, report writing and review, evaluation of submitted reports and responses to inspection findings, and other activities as required. "
