The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit charitable law firm dedicated to ensuring equal access to the justice system for the low-income, disadvantaged and traditionally underserved residents of Palm Beach County. We are seeking a highly motivated attorney for our Education Advocacy Project, which provides holistic legal services and systemic representation to families of students in the K-12 public school system.

JOB SUMMARY

The Education Advocacy Project attorney will zealously advocate for educational rights of disabled and disadvantaged children. Provide individual legal representation in state, federal and administrative forums. Assist with identifying and developing solutions to systemic problems. Develop and maintain community outreach program. Work schedule is as follows: generally Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional evening or weekend work and frequent early morning school meetings. Travel in Palm Beach County and the ability to work in the office and remotely required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represents clients before administrative and judicial tribunals in a full range of civil legal matters, with a focus on education law.
  • Enforces statutory requirements on behalf of client; litigates as necessary.
  • Assists with potential client intakes.
  • Conducts interviews of clients in the field or at the office.
  • Investigates and develops individual and systemic cases.
  • Counsels and advises clients in legal matters.
  • Negotiates on behalf of clients.
  • Drafts letters, complaints, memos, pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents and written materials.
  • Remains current on new developments in the law.
  • Performs legal research.
  • Maintains accurate and complete files in compliance with ethics and grant requirements.
  • Makes referrals and follows up referrals of clients to appropriate alternative or additional sources of assistance.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information handled.
  • Maintains fidelity to grant requirements.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with social service agencies.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with the other members of the education and juvenile bar.
  • Assists in the development and execution of community education projects and activities.
  • Serves on community, bar, and county committees where feasible.
  • Attends staff and other meetings in the community as assigned.
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
  • Works with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
  • Keeps accurate accounting of time spent on each client’s case through Legal Server.
  • Must work the days and hours to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks, and be punctual and timely in meeting all performance requirements, including but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines.
  • Must maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees and clients of the organization.
  • Assists the Executive Director and/or supervisor with special projects, assignments and any additional duties as deemed appropriate or as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from A.B.A. accredited law school.
  • Member of the Florida Bar.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience with education law.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and access justice issues.
  • Comfort and experience working with disabled and low-income populations.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills.
  • Dependability, initiative, motivation, and concern for interests of clients.
  • Strong, positive interpersonal skills.
  • Good judgment and organization.
  • Commitment to remain in position for at least one (1) year.
  • Must pass Level 2 background screening and internal conflict check process.
  • Professional remote working space with internet capabilities for video conferencing.
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly.
  • High ethical standards.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation.

Salary Range: Salary range $52,000 to $60,000 depending on experience. Full benefits package in addition to salary (health, dental, vision, 401K, disability, life insurance).
