Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
- Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in construction or maintenance activities, including five (5) years of experience in water and wastewater underground utility construction maintenance, and one (1) year of which was in a lead or supervisory capacity.
Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Required to stay current in the AW Respiratory Protection and Confined-Space Entry programs.
Positions in Water Distribution: Class C Water Distribution License or higher from TCEQ required at time of hire. A Surface Water License may substitute for the Class C Water Distribution License.
Positions in Wastewater Collection: Class II Wastewater Collection License or higher from TCEQ required at time of hire.

This position is responsible for emergency and scheduled wastewater repairs as well as on-call 24 hour emergency response for Austin Water. This position will respond to customer complaints, addressing customer concerns and providing resolution. Additionally this position provides general supervisory functions such as SSPRs, counseling/coaching, leadership, and crew assignments.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Driving Requirement:
Applicants must hold a current applicable driver’s license and have no more than six (6) points assessed on Driver Record Evaluation (DRE). Please review the City of Austin Driving Standards to assess your driving record. DRE will be verified through the Texas Department of Public Safety..
Commercial Driver’s License
This position requires that applicants possess a Commercial Driver License to meet the minimum qualifications. Employees possessing a CDL must comply with the Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing rules as outlined by the City of Austin Alcohol and Drug Policy for Drivers of Commercial Motor Vehicles. Collection System Maintenance requires a Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
Technical Licensure:
Positions in Wastewater Collection require a Class II Wastewater Collection License or higher from TCEQ required at time of hire.

Work Environment
This position is in a heavy industrial setting and requires performing all duties associated with supervising the operation of heavy equipment and assisting with capital improvement projects in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold and rain. Position will require adaptability and willingness to change or modify work load on demand and multitask. Position requires working in environments which may have hazardous situations.
Confined Space Entry and Physical Requirements
Candidates must be able to work in environments which may have hazardous atmospheres or in confined spaces where there is limited or restricted means for entry and exit, or where the activities of an employee are hindered.
This position will require that you be able to perform duties with confidence climbing heights of up to 20 feet on ladders that support up to 280 lbs., descending into confined spaces up to 30 feet deep with the use of a SRL Body Harness that supports up to 280 lbs., and lifting and/or carrying equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 lbs., unassisted. The rated weight of 280 lbs. supported by the confined space equipment includes both the individual’s body weight and 15 lbs of required equipment.
All Austin Water worksite locations are tobacco-free. Use of tobacco products and/or e-cigarettes is not permitted on any AW worksite – including construction sites, parking lot, garage or in any personal vehicle located on the premises.

$30.14 – 37.68
Hours
Monday – Friday
- 6:30am – 3:00pm
- 8:30am – 5:00pm (during on-call)
All employees are required to be available for overtime, call-back, and on-call for emergency response on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications
- Basic experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Experience operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe or excavator.
- Experience with confined space entry.
- Experience with traffic control plans and devices.
- Experience with safety responsibilities while working in and around excavations with heavy equipment.
- Experience with sight-level and calculating percent grade for installing sewer pipe.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certification for the respiratory protection and confined space entry program.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

- Provides technical expertise on a variety of distribution and collection activities.
- Reviews/evaluates/records data using PC’s and video equipment in preparing and producing reports to ensure quality, productivity and accuracy of work assignments.
- Interprets applicable Federal, State, and local ordinances and regulations and assures compliance.
- Coordinates activities with engineers, construction inspectors, and other city departments.
- May act in liaison capacity with other departments, divisions, and organizations.
- Investigates and responds to citizen complaints and concerns.
