Position Summary
The Culinary Services Department at the College of Saint Benedict invites applicants for the full-time (.75 FTE), benefit eligible position of Baker. This position is designated as essential staff.
We are a scratch bakery, searching for a skilled, creative baker who strives to provide excellent baked items and service in an efficient, professional manner. This position has a direct impact on the residential dining program, catering and retail programs. Under the general direction of the Head Baker, the baker will design, execute, and improve recipes, perform quality checks on ingredients and finished products, use icing, glazes, fillings, and decorations to enhance item presentation, and process orders from customers. You will also greet customers, answer questions, clean workstations, and equipment, and perform other duties to ensure that customer needs are satisfied, and the bakery is well-stocked and operating smoothly.
Schedule: Working every other weekend during the academic year. Shift examples may be 3am – 11am, 5:00am – 1:00pm. Over the summer they may work about 20 hours a week on average. They may be an opportunity for them to work in custodial over the summer, to get more hours.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble all dry and wet goods for production, Measure or weigh flour or other ingredients to prepare batters, doughs, fillings, or icings, using scales or graduated containers. Measure ingredients or substances to be used in production processes.
  • Knowledge of operating a scale.
  • Adapt the quantity of ingredients to match the amount of items to be baked.
  • Mix, Round, Proof, Bake.
  • Apply glazes, icings, or other toppings to baked goods, using spatulas or brushes.
  • Utilize industrial equipment to facilitate efficient production measuring and combining ingredients and using mixers, blenders, heat sources, and other equipment to make baked goods, such as cookies, bread, cakes, etc.
  • Decorating and displaying finished products.
  • Handle all hot or dangerous items with care.
  • Ensure all baked goods are stored and packaged properly.
  • Ensures timely completion of prepared items to various residential and retail outlets.
  • Keep records relating to production levels.
  • Clean and prep all baking materials for the specific job as well as restock workstations and ensure that all equipment is sanitized and prepared for the next shift.
  • Maintain standards of sanitation and safety as established by the College of St. Benedict, local, state, and federal health authorities.
  • Check equipment to ensure that it meets health and safety regulations and perform maintenance or cleaning, as necessary.
  • May deep clean over slower periods to maintain health and safety regulations
  • Designing and improving recipes. Testing ingredients and finished goods to ensure that each item meets food safety and quality controls, observe color of products being baked and adjust oven temperatures, humidity, or conveyor speeds accordingly.
  • Flexibility to work around customer demands, including early morning, night, weekend, and holiday availability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to
  • Attends in-services and meeting as required
  • Perform related duties, or other tasks, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent
  • 9-12 months previous bakery experience, preferred
  • Serve Safe certification, preferred
  • Firm understanding of the Metric and Imperial systems of measurements
  • Ability to read, write and follow directions
  • Good sense of timing and accuracy with weights and measures
  • Basic math and computer skills
  • Good verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Neatness, cleanliness, and sensitivity to food appearance.
  • Ability to operate all bakery equipment, preferred. This would include large Rotary Bakery Oven, Dough Moulder, Convection Ovens, Range top, and burners.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs. on occasion.
  • Frequent standing and walking
  • Ability to stand temperature fluctuation and perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, stooping and handling of materials
