JOB TITLE: Behavior Interventionist K-5

REPORTS TO: Principal, Student Services Department

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time- Contract

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in education from accredited college or university, degree in education related to behavior preferred.

Valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate with proper endorsement; endorsement(s) with a behavior focus are preferred

Teacher candidates are expected to implement strong instruction and assessment practices, build positive relationships and provide interventions for students all in the area of behavior.

SKILLS required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; appropriate social and communication skills that adapt to the audience.

KNOWLEDGE required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: school district operations and philosophy; concepts of grammar and punctuation; best practices related to support students and teachers with behavior management at all tiers of instruction and intervention.

ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with constant and sustained interruptions; working with detailed information/data.

Additional Duties may be assigned by the Principal and/or Supervisor.

Essential Functions

The Behavioral Interventionist is responsible for supporting students and teachers with behavior challenges. The interventionist may be expected to do the following things:
  • Conduct individual or small group lessons focusing on skill development
  • Provide coaching to teachers to implement best practices related to classroom management and/or individual coaching based on student need
  • Conduct professional development for staff in the area of classroom management, development of effective behavior intervention plans, strategies to best support students struggling with behavior, and more
  • Observe and interact with students to develop well written Functional Behavior Assessments
  • Lead a team of teachers in the development of effective Positive Behavior Intervention Plans
  • Intervene in crisis situations with students which may include the use of strategies, holds and restraints
  • Attend necessary team meetings
  • Regular attendance at building(s) to adequately support students and staff
  • Complete fidelity checks to ensure implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Plans
  • Efficiently and effectively communicate with teachers, administration, parents, caretakers, counselors, and any/all other parties involved to ensure consistent delivery of supports, services and knowledge is shared
  • Create and support data collection mechanisms for self and team members to ensure data driven decisions are made regularly
  • Possible travel from building to building may be expected
  • Create and maintain cohesive working relationships with school employees
  • Support staff in creating classwide behavior supports and programming at the Tier 1 level
  • Willingness to model best practices for classroom management as well as model skills, language, and strategies to meet individual student needs
  • Assist in creation of and support the implementation of MTSS-B district-wide
  • Evaluate effectiveness of this role with data collection, analysis and problem solving

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to lift and pull or push articles up to 50 pounds. He/she sits most of the time but must walk frequently and, at times, stand. The employee is required to reach with his/her hands and continuously to repeat the same hand, arm, or finger motion many times as in typing. Manual and finger dexterity are essential to the job. He/she is constantly working to meet deadlines with severe time restraints. He/she must see and read fine print such as typed or handwritten materials and have good depth perception (fine muscle control). The employee must, also, be able to hear conversation in a noisy environment and to communicate clearly and concisely through speech.
