SUMMARY
As a member of the R&D Operations Team, the team member will assist in the development and continuous improvement of a syngas fermentation process for the production of various chemical compounds. This position will work closely with other members of the R&D, Engineering, and Operations teams to support corporate development goals.
The ideal candidate must be able to work 12-hour shift rotation (4 days on/ 4 days off); The current operating shift is 7:30 AM – 7:30 PM.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Conduct all aspects of lab-scale fermentations, including experimental set-up, reactor operation, equipment maintenance, process sampling, data analysis, and documentation.
· Follow operating procedures for laboratory equipment, including bioreactors, distillation systems, media/culture prep and handling systems (flow metering, piping, pumps, and scales).
· Use aseptic techniques to safely clean, handle and sterilize equipment. Handle anaerobic microbial cultures with care.
· Manage utilization of gas cylinders, moving and relocating as necessary.
· Use analytical instrumentation including pH meters, spectrophotometers, GCs, HPLCs, microscopes, and anaerobic enzyme assays for process monitoring.
· Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work area and follow best practices related to laboratory safety. Participate in safety training and initiatives.
· Participate and support projects to improve laboratory operating discipline and develop the systems for laboratory communication (SOPs, Management of Change, Shift Communication)
· Collaborate with other members of R&D to evaluate the impact of experimental findings on technology improvement efforts and co-author technical reports.
· Manage and coordinate the ordering of lab materials and supplies for uninterrupted, 24/7 process demonstration efforts.
· Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/COMPETENCIES
To perform the essential functions of this position successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
A bachelor’s degree in biology or chemistry is preferred however, industrial experience as a mechanical technician or lab technician in a manufacturing, pilot-plant, or lab environment, with working knowledge in microbiology, chemical manufacturing, or mechanical engineering is valued and will be considered.
The position requires critical thinking as it pertains to troubleshooting, operational changes, and safety practices. Expectations for this position are to provide feedback to continuously improve processes and procedures related to first-of-a-kind technology.
Must possess the willingness and ability to learn new skills/technologies quickly and to use automation under instruction.
Experience with manufacturing/pilot plant process operation or lab fermentation, handling microbial cultures with good aseptic technique, and some familiarity with anaerobic microbial techniques are valued.
Experience with mechanical equipment such as pumps, regulators, rotating equipment, and pressurized vessels, and a candidate with mechanical inclinations is valued.
Good observational and organizational skills, basic knowledge of biological safety, training in common lab (microbiology) techniques, ability to work with Microsoft Office products, ability to record and organize experimental data, and a basic understanding of statistics are also desired skills.
The ability to work in close proximity to several potent chemical and environmental hazards (including syngas); the ability to closely follow safety protocols is a necessity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position is largely self-directed and requires an understanding of company policy, procedures, and values. Applicant must work well in a team environment and have excellent communication skills. Team members will be required to adhere to all safety requirements in all work environments.
This position operates in a laboratory and has physical aspects to the job. In the laboratory environment, the team member may be exposed to chemical hazards including syngas, moving mechanical parts, and common laboratory hazards such as heat, sharps, and pressurized fermentation vessels. The position occasionally requires lifting weights of fifty pounds and working both at elevations and in tight spaces.
The position requires standing for long periods of time in addition to frequent bending.
