Job Summary

The Sr Drill and Blast (D&B) Engineer is responsible for designing all drilling and blasting patterns in a safe and environmentally responsible manner that meet production objectives, tracking costs, and assisting with the budgeting process.

Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Visibly support and champion Peabody’s Mission and Values.
  • Act in accordance with and adhere to Safety as a Way of Life Management System.
  • Coordinate and monitor D&B activities with Drill and Blast Team Leads, Shift Supervisors, Mine Engineers, and other Mine Management.
  • Produce daily shot schedule, pattern configuration, and blasting radius.
  • Ensure D&B activities are aligned with mine designs, geotechnical activities and mine operations schedules.
  • Provide technical guidance and support through the Drill and Blast Team Leads and Shift Supervisors for drillers and contractors.
  • Serve as the liaison for the blasting contractor, including communication of Peabody’s policies, accruals, safety audits, budgeting, and scheduling.
  • Coordinate the availability of drill consumables and blasting accessories.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies including State, BATFE, and MSHA.
  • Responsible for ensuring that blast hole samples are representative and of sufficient size
  • Responsible for regular seismic data collection and evaluation for implementation in wall control program
  • Support and assist with the mine’s short and mid-range planning efforts and annual drilling and blasting budget.
  • Conduct safety observations and audits monthly.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Company.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Explosives Engineering or related fields (Geology, Civil Engineering) with a strong emphasis in drilling and blasting
  • Minimum of 5 years open pit mine experience
  • Previous drilling or cast blasting design experience
  • Ability to use AutoCAD and Vulcan or similar planning software
  • Ability to operate seismographs
  • Ability to make changes in response to unplanned events
  • Ability to train and mentor others in drilling and blasting design

Physical Requirements

Physical Requirements - Surface Environment

  • Must have the ability to stand for up to 4 hours per shift
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles
  • Must have the ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on/off equipment and ladders
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms/legs and good hand to eye coordination
  • Must have the ability to lift/raise 10 – 50 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently during the work shift
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light/dark, in and around artificial light, and in a confined work area
  • Must have the ability to work various shifts (required shifts include days, evening and nights, with rotating schedules, weekends and holidays)

Pay: $60,000.00 - $135,656.97 per year
