Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Created in 2012, the Carolina Higher Education Opportunity Programs (CHEOP) office Comprises the NC Health Careers Access Program (NC-HCAP) and TRiO Programs (Upward Bound Program and the McNair Scholars Program).
Through both NC-HCAP and TRiO Programs, CHEOP Promotes and Maintains Programs, Activities, and Services that Facilitate Access to College, Graduate and Ph.D. Programs, as well as Health Professional Schools for Individuals from Historically Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups, First Generation Status, Rural and/or Low- Income Backgrounds. The Programs under CHEOP Enhance Participants’ Academic Performance, Retention, and Personal and Professional Development to Promote Graduation in Secondary and Post-Secondary Education.

Position Summary
The UNC Upward Bound Program is a Federal TRiO Program funded to serve 102 Eligible High School Scholars in Select High Schools in Durham, Chatham, and Lee Counties. Our goal is to help Scholars build the Skills and Motivation necessary to pursue and succeed in College and attain a Bachelor’s Degree. Each summer, the Program offers Scholars a Comprehensive, 6-week Hybrid Summer Academy that provides Academic Enrichment, Professional Development, and Personal Growth Opportunities for Participants. Upward Bound Scholars engage in Math, Science, English, Spanish, History, and Elective Courses throughout the Summer.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Bridge Coordinator will work closely with Upward Bound Staff to provide Academic Support and Guidance to the Graduated Seniors (a.k.a. Bridge Scholars) participating in the Summer Bridge Academy. The Bridge Coordinator will join a Team of CHEOP/Upward Bound Staff, Academic Instructors, Supplemental Instructors, Pre-College Mentors, and a College Prep Coach who ensure the Success of the Summer Academy and Summer Bridge Academy. The Bridge Coordinator must:
  • Attend Required Orientations prior to the Beginning of the Summer Academy.
  • Work 20 hours per week.
  • Meet individually with each Scholar twice per week for One-On-One Advising.
  • Attend Classes with Scholars.
  • Track Scholar Progress and develop Plans to help them achieve successful Grades.
  • Plan and Implement Activities each week to build Rapport with Bridge Scholars and expose Scholars to Campus Life.
  • Present themselves as positive, motivational Role Models to Scholars at all Times.
  • Demonstrate Integrity, Dependability, and Passion for promoting College Access and Student Success.
  • Uphold all Upward Bound and University Policies and Procedures.
  • Report to the Upward Bound Assistant Director.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Submit Copy of Degree, Credentials or Transcript.
  • Successfully complete a Background Check (Additional Information will be provided to Select Applicants).

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, demonstrate an Interest in working with Low-Income and First-Generation College Students, and be willing to commit to 20 hours a Week during the Bridge Program. Preference will be given to Applicants who have Teaching/Tutoring Experience, specifically in one or more of the Courses Available to Bridge Scholars who are all enrolled in Undergraduate Classes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the Summer Academy.
