The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 to work as a member of the Olympic Region maintenance organization. The goal of this position is to maintain WSDOT owned bridge structures in the Olympic Region in good or fair condition. Operating a wide variety of bridge maintenance equipment and tools, this position is responsible for safely and effectively performing journey-level work in the maintenance, repair, operation, and reconstruction of over 650 bridges in WSDOT’s Olympic Region to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce.

What to Expect
This position is required to perform work that is often physical in nature, primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic. Work performed may be at elevated heights, above 100 feet over land or water, and/or in a confined environment. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies; work alternate, emergency shifts as assigned, as well as respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed. Rotational night shift is required for this position.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 will:


  • Perform maintenance and structural repairs on floating, moving, and fixed structures on an ongoing basis and in emergencies.
  • Diagnose deficiencies and repair/replace bridge components; maintain, modify, and repair components of bridge structures; perform maintenance level inspections of bridges and components.
  • Perform Preventative Maintenance (PM) such as drain cleaning, bridge deck sealing, painting, expansion joint cleaning and bridge cleaning.
  • Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and sketches; assure adherence to safety rules and precautions by assigned personnel; develop solutions for repair and maintenance problems.
  • Enter and utilize DATA in Maintenance Productivity Enhancement Tool (M-PET) and Bridge Engineering Information System (BEIST) to document both program generated preventive and corrective maintenance items completed, and non-system generated work accomplished.
  • Operate specialized equipment such as small boats, man lifts and Under Bridge Inspection Trucks.
  • Perform traffic control such as manually flag traffic or signing for lane closures, road closures and detours; conduct moving and stationary traffic control operations using attenuator/buffer truck.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate. AND-
  • Two (2) years’ experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 with experience in heavy construction, carpentry, concrete, steel fabrication, electrical or millwright.
OR
Journey level standing in a construction trade as attested by:
  • Completion of recognized apprenticeship; OR-
  • Full journey status in a trade union; OR-
  • Four (4) years of experience as a full-time helper to a journey worker in the specified trade.
OR
  • Equivalent education/experience.

In addition to the above, the following are also required:
  • Possession of a Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions; or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Skilled in the use of radio communication equipment, computers, phones, and other electronic equipment.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Experience reading and understanding bridge construction plans for trouble shooting.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of structural systems such as concrete, steel, and wood.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Two (2) years of experience operating and performing preventative maintenance with vehicles 15,000 GVW or greater.
  • Skilled in the use computers for communicating and sending attachments, using Microsoft Office, and enter and retrieve information from WSDOT data bases such as M-PET.
