The Category Merchant is responsible for executing the overall short and long-term strategy for assigned category/ categories. This includes marketing products, developing product line strategies and reporting financial results. The Category Merchant makes all or most of the buying decisions for the assigned category and negotiates terms with suppliers to drive item selection and pricing. Provides strategy and category tactics to assigned category team members for detailed analysis and recommendations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develops merchandising strategy to understand key business drivers (e.g. historical performance, industry/ competitive landscape, consumer segmentation).
  • Sets and leads the product strategy for assigned merchandise category/ categories; collaborates with analytics teams to ensure data supports strategy and decision making.
  • Develops and implements the financial strategy for assigned category / categories.
  • Negotiates cost of products to assigned category / categories.
  • Creates category product strategy and volume goals to support overall business performance.
  • Executes business review of assigned category / categories on an ongoing basis to determine product mix review and changes to drive category goals.
  • Determines changes to product mix to better optimize assortment.
  • Influences the supplier relationship strategy to support overall product strategy and company financial targets.
  • Collaborates with suppliers on promotional support for products and category.
  • May serve as a key contributor on various key projects within a business function.
  • Coaches and guides Assistant & Associate Category Merchants.
  • Stays current on the latest industry technologies, trends and strategies.
  • Completes work in a timely and accurate manner while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • This position requires a minimum 10 years buying, account management, product management, financial analysis and/or marketing or related experience with progressive complexity and responsibility.
  • Experience in merchandising execution, visual presentation, new concepts, inventory management, channel management, and supplier management is beneficial.
  • Corporate retail experience is required (proven proficiency in both a brick and mortar and/or online retail environment); with an emphasis on Tire industry experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant products to make purchasing decisions is required.
  • Experience with managing regional and national marketing and/or category programs is required.
  • Ability to manage sales typically in excess of $500M is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to manage large scale projects in a complex environment is required.
  • Advanced experience in SAP & MicroStrategy, is required.
  • Advanced understanding of internal and environmental sales drivers is required.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, multi-task, and manage multiple projects to meet various deadlines simultaneously is required.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a highly cross-functional environment is required.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft office, including skills with Word and Excel are necessary.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze and disseminate information with attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Advanced presentation skills required, including demonstrated ability to communicate across all levels of the organization, present complex ideas concisely and clearly articulate ideas verbally and in writing is necessary.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong supplier relationships.
  • Collaboration, facilitation and negotiation skills are required. Business acumen knowledge and understanding of business, purchasing and merchandising issues, priorities, goals and strategy is preferred.
  • Ability to provide innovative ideas/ solutions is essential.
  • This position requires excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Customer service skills including the ability to manage and respond to different customer situations while maintaining a positive and friendly attitude is essential.
  • Maintaining confidentiality, treating others with respect and upholding Company values is key.
Educational Requirements:
This position requires a Bachelor degree in supply chain, procurement, marketing or a related, or equivalent work experience.
