Position Overview:

The Chief Medical Executive is a key member of the Administrative Team and is responsible for medical affairs, quality and providing administration (at affiliate, regional and system level) and medical staff with knowledge, experience and leadership from a medical management perspective. The CME partners with the medical staff executive leadership and the broader medical staff to facilitate the best possible working relationships with knowledge, experience and leadership from medical management perspective. The position facilitates communication and understanding among the various clinical components of the delivery system, assuring the provision of high quality, efficient and safe care. The position may indirectly oversee Quality & Patient Safety and Care Coordination at the affiliate level. The position participates in strategic planning at the affiliate, operating unit and system level. The CME provides oversight and management of various physician emergency call and professional services agreements.

In this role, the CME works closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Nurse Executive (CNE), Quality & Patient Safety leaders and the system Chief Medical Officer to assure better, safer care, and enhance the environment for practicing clinicians with the goal of providing patient centered, perfect care.

Job Description:

Education / Certification / Licensure:

Doctorate Degree (MD or DO) is required. Master’s Degree is preferred, preferably in business, medical management or public health. Candidate must be California physician licensure eligible. Board certification or Board eligible desired.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Previous experience in a leadership role in a medical staff structure, such as functioning as a Medical Executive Committee member. At least five years’ experience as department chair, committee chair or chief of staff.

  • Demonstrated team leadership and organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Strong action planning skills, interpersonal skills and proven written and verbal communication skills are required. Flexibility, adaptability, motivation and creativity in dealing with change, timeliness and attention to detail are required as well.

  • Ability to read, write, hear and verbally communicate in English to the degree required to perform the job.

  • Must be able to travel in and out of San Mateo County, and may be required to travel outside of California for meetings, conferences, seminars.

Pay Range: $183.89-$248.80

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
