The Coding Auditor, PB is responsible for monitoring compliance with applicable clinical documentation to support coding and billing regulations to insure appropriate reimbursement and to support public reporting and various initiatives as directed by Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) Network.
Responsibilities:
A day in the life of a Coding Auditor, PB at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
  • Performs coding quality audits of all records (outpatient, inpatient, procedures, testing) to assure appropriateness and accurate code assignments in accordance with Center of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) guidelines and provide ongoing feedback and analysis of the education needs for the providers and staff.
  • Responsible for providing assistance with coding inquiries from providers, practices, Revenue Cycle Analyst staff, Training Team, etc.
  • Analyzes physician documentation in the medical record for clinical correlation for coding accuracy and queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the medical record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.
  • Brings identified concerns to the department manager and Director for resolution.
  • Works collaboratively with Coding Quality Educators providing audit results, coding references, and other materials associated with completed reviews of employed providers, including research, and associated research documentation.
  • Assists in special projects when applicable such as in-house audits or audits pertaining to contract coders.
  • Creates spreadsheets and summary of audit findings.
  • Assists the coding staff when needed.
  • Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements, new technology and procedures in accordance with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Office of Inspector General (OIG) regulations
  • Participate in special projects as needed.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Associate's degree or higher or equivalent years of coding experience (2-4 years).
  • Minimum of 5 years of Physician Coding experience in a large multi-specialty group.
  • Minimum of 2 years of Physician Quality Improvement audit experience.
  • Experience and thorough knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.
  • Knowledge of data reporting requirements and proficiency in computer skills.
  • Extensive knowledge in data collection and physician coding reviews.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
  • Minimum of 2 years of physician quality improvement auditing experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Registered Health Information Technician, Registered Health Information Administrator and/or Certified Coding Specialist/Certified Coding Specialist -Physician or Certified Professional Coder/Certified Professional Coder-Hospital Outpatient certification.
  • Certified Professional Medical Auditor strongly preferred and/or must be obtained within a year of employment.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
  • Certified Risk Coder
