The Refining Value Chain Optimization group at the Anacortes Refinery is seeking candidates for an opening in the RVCO Economics and Planning Group. The RVCO E&P Team is responsible for optimizing refinery operations, developing short range production forecasts, feedstock scheduling, product production and scheduling, and intermediate inventory management. All members of the team are expected to be actively engaged in ensuring all products meet specifications. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to interact with and influence many areas of the company. The group works closely with Operations and Technical Services to understand unit constraints and communicate the economic drivers of each of the operating areas. The team also works directly with Global Feedstock and Clean Product Value Chains, RVCO Findlay/SATX, and Product Quality to evaluate opportunities on feedstocks, products, and inter-refinery transfers.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate will initially be trained to use APS (AspenTech petroleum scheduling) software for refinery feedstock scheduling, specifically crude and gas oil. The candidate will also have opportunities to learn dark oils scheduling, gasoline blending, and the refinery linear program (PIMS) model for forecasting. This position will serve as a back-up forecasting position. Responsibilities of the position include:
  • Develop planning and scheduling skills. Be responsible for scheduling crude and gas oil followed by other commodities as dictated by the team’s needs.
  • Develop wharf plans and write-ups. Interact with ships, schedulers, and marine to successfully carry out ship operations at the refinery.
  • Work with Tech Service to identify optimization opportunities surrounding crude diet and other feedstocks.
  • Obtain approval for new crudes/feedstocks when applicable.
  • Perform adhoc analysis to guide business decisions around outages and slow downs affecting various feedstock plans.
  • Support daily refinery material balances for accounting and risk management purposes via APS.
  • Provide information concerning refinery crude processing limits and refinery constraints to help in crude purchasing decisions.
  • Works with Operations and Maintenance to plan and perform necessary tank work.
  • Participates in TAR planning.
  • Participates in the on-duty call list rotation
  • The ideal candidate should be a strong communicator with interest in learning refinery economics and MPC’s commercial side of the business.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Degree: Bachelor of Science
  • Major Discipline: Chemical Engineering or other Technical Discipline
  • Years’ Experience Required: A minimum of 3 years refinery process or operations experience is preferred
  • Refinery Linear Programming/Economic Analysis Tools i.e (PIMS) experience is preferred
  • Travel Required: minimal
