The UVA Cancer Center is seeking a Community Outreach and Engagement Specialist for the greater Danville region. This position will work in conjunction with the staff, faculty and the community to support efforts related to community outreach and engagement and research in cancer control. This includes establishing, maintaining and cultivating positive long-term relationships with community partners, coordinating and implementing community cancer prevention and risk reduction education and cancer screening programs, and assisting with building capacity for community research.

Duties will include:

Implementation of Educational Programs

  • Develop and implement culturally relevant cancer prevention, risk reduction and survivorship educational programs, in alignment with the overall strategic vision of the Community Outreach and Engagement team and UVA Cancer Center.

  • Establish program objectives and tracks that objectives are met

  • Apply evidence-based principles and methods to program development and implementation

Research Coordination

  • Participate in all aspects of project implementation for cancer related community based research project.

  • Develop relationships with research faculty and staff

  • Assist with training the of site staff, and travel to the research sites on a regular basis to assist with providing oversight and assistance to project staff the research sites, ensuring that the intervention is being delivered according to the protocol

Assess program needs

  • Assist in ongoing community health needs assessment

  • Participate in needs assessment, data collection and follow-up

  • Analyze available data pertinent to specific programs

  • Assist in the development of program priorities based on established needs

  • Ability to collect, analyze and report information for program leaders


Develop internal and external relationships

  • Cultivate relationships with businesses, health care systems, educational and community groups

  • Recruit and coordinate community members, staff, or students for educational and outreach programs, working groups and research opportunities.

  • Collaborate with community groups to host and/or attend cancer focused community events (eg. Community cancer screenings, risk reduction discussions on relevant cancer topics such as tobacco cessation and nutrition)

  • Serve on local and state wide coalitions

Please note that this is a restricted position and continuation is dependent upon the availability of the position, funding, and satisfactory performance. This position is based in Danville, VA. Moderate travel throughout Southside Virginia and quarterly travel to Charlottesville required. Some weekend and evening hours will be required.

Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree required. Additional experience will be required in lieu of a degree.
Experience: Two years of experience required with a Bachelor's degree. Six years of experience required with a High School degree or equivalent.

Preferred Requirements

Education: A degree in public health or a related field.

Experience : F our years’ experience in outreach and engagement. Prior experience coordinating community events, data collection, and project management.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Salary Range: $53,000-$60,000
