Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Carpentry Superintendent, or other appropriate employee, performs a variety of skilled carpentry work in residential and/or light commercial construction, maintenance, alteration or rehabilitation and repair activities in assigned projects, which may include remodeling and new construction. Performs related work as required. Inspects and certifies work in compliance with applicable building codes. Assists in training apprentices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs skilled carpentry activities depending upon assignment, including trade activities such as rough and finished carpentry work from beginning to end for new construction, maintenance and/or repair. May perform minor plumbing, welding, and electrical work.
Studies specifications in blueprints, sketches, diagrams or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions, time, equipment and materials required for a job.
Uses hand and power tools and other equipment to install structures and fixtures, such as windows, doors, insulation, drywall, ceiling, roofing, tiles, frames, floorings, trim and hardware.
Builds or repairs cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using woodworking machines, carpenter’s hand tools, and power tools.
Removes damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repairs or replace, using hand or power tools.
Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
Maintains accurate records, document actions, and reports.
May perform janitorial duties on the grounds and in facilities before or after construction work.
Travels to the villages on the Arctic Slope when assigned.
Must be able to work well with co-workers, clients and community members. Must be able to conduct yourself properly as a TNHA employee at all times, especially when traveling on TNHA business.
Provides on-the-job training for maintenance personnel and/or local apprentices in general skills of the carpentry trade.
Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Observes TNHA safety standards and regulations, policies and procedures.
Prepares and submits written work cost estimates, material lists and reports.
Works independently, accurately and detailed in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions.
Performs basic and complex calculations, planning, and monitoring for projects as needed.
Maintains complete confidentiality of all information obtained through professional and client interactions.
Performs all other duties as assigned or as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:
This is an experienced level position and employee must be able to perform a wide variety of electrical and light carpentry work to ensure that TNHA facilities and residential properties are maintained in a safe and effective working condition. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. - Knowledge of residential construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety.
- Proficient at stain-grade trim work, hang doors, drill and set door hardware, set windows, layout for steps and common rafters, read blueprints, and utilization of appropriate math and analytical skills necessary to do materials estimates.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures; knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.
- Reasoning skills to include ability to solve practical problems where only limited information exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Required:
- High School Graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- Five (5) years of work experience in carpentry within all phases of residential construction, maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of the principles in carpentry and construction trade.
- While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to walk, climb or balance; kneel; crawl talk and hear. Vision abilities include close, distance color, peripheral and depth.
- While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to travel by small aircraft, outside weather, extreme cold, wet or humid conditions. The noise level is usually moderate.
- Must be able to travel to all outlying Arctic Slope villages for extended visits.
- Valid Alaska Driver’s License that meets TNHA insurance criteria.
Preferred:
- Alaska Native and/or American Indian (member of federally-recognized Tribe)
- Ability to read, write, speak and/or understand conversational Iñupiaq
- Two (2) years of Arctic work experience
