Job description

The role of the Controls Engineer is to design and program control systems for dispensing equipment. The duties include designing the system electrically for the control panel, selecting proper hardware for the system, writing the PLC program, HMI program, startup and debugging the system, completing all pertinent documentation, and adhering to a given budget of expenses and hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct the electrical design, peripheral device programming, machine PLC/HMI programming, coordinate the machine debug, power-up, and machine validation with mechanical and electrical build team members.
  • Design of control panels, creating panel layout drawings for quoting and/or constructing purposes.
  • Perform project management functions (budget, schedule, procurement) for the controls portion of the projects. Assist Project Manager with overall project schedule and strictly adhere to all milestone dates.
  • Write Descriptions of Operation / Functional Specification for projects utilizing PLC controls.
  • Ensure that equipment is designed and programmed to customer and/or GP Reeves build specifications using standard techniques and approaches.
  • Participate in all site activities related to implementing the PLC program(s) including installation support, commissioning, testing, and stand by support.
  • Handle support calls.
  • Ability to communicate with internal groups of different disciplines as well as external customers and suppliers.
  • Overtime may be necessary based on customer orders including weekdays, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Participate in all company functions and meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical experience or degree.
  • 3+ years experience with PLC's, HMI, Robot, AutoCAD, Motion Control, Pneumatics, and Hydraulics systems.
  • Employee is skilled in using associated PC software including Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • PLC/HMI programming using a variety of software including but not limited to Factory Talk, RS-500, RS-5000, Splat, GP-Pro, CX-1, C-More EA-9, Siemens Portal, Siemens Step-7, Horner, and Click.
  • (Preferred) Proficient in electrical CAD to create control device layout schematics and control panels drawings.
  • Solid testing skills are required.
  • (Preferred) Understanding of panel design including back panel layouts, power consumption and hardware sizing is required.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but serve as a project manager involving coordinating peer activities to completion. This position also acts as a mentor for other positions in the company to grow functional knowledge.

Travel Requirements

Ability to travel up to 20% of the time for installation support or service on domestic trips usually within driving distance of our headquarters or occasional international trips of typically less than 1 week in length.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
