Job description
- Determines academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities,
- Educates and informs faculty and staff of their obligations and responsibilities to students with disabilities,
- Assists students who request accommodations in co-curricular aspects of campus life, and
- Purchases equipment or hires, coordinates and supervises consultants to provide auxiliary aides and services.
- Determines through evaluation and intake appropriate and reasonable classroom and campus accommodations.
- Helps students request accommodations and trains them to use approved accommodations, including those related to coursework and classroom, housing, dining, and other campus events/facilities.
- Manages student files and records, reviews documentation, and prepares correspondence.
- Provides front-line professional assistance: responds to inquiries, conducts initial interviews and returning student appointments, and establishes/facilitates accommodations.
- Serves as a consultant to faculty and staff regarding accommodations for students with disabilities.
- Assists in developing and providing professional development for faculty and staff on access issues.
- Assists in developing and revising student policies and procedures, faculty and staff resources, and other print and electronic information disseminated by OA.
- Staffs campus and office initiatives designed to address access on a large scale, such as orientation events, open houses and final exams.
- Manages electronic student files and maintains student database.
- Responsible, together with other OA staff, for acquiring and maintaining assistive equipment, computers and other technologies.
- Assists students as needed with the use of assistive or adaptive technology and reading/ transcribing tests.
Master’s degree in special education, counseling, psychology, social work or related field and two years of relevant experience working with diverse populations in an educational, clinical, counseling or social work setting.
Strong understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act (as amended in 2008) and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and various assistive technologies (JAWS, ZoomText, NaturalReader, etc.). Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal and presentation skills. Sufficient technical skills to master required software and equipment necessary to perform job duties and assist students. Ability to maintain confidential information, coordinate multiple concurrent tasks, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and administrators.
