The University of Southern Maine is expanding and so is our department! It is our pleasure to invite qualified applicants for the Coordinator of Orientation & First Year Experience position, reporting to our Director of Orientation and First Year Experience at the University of Southern Maine (USM) and serving on a dynamic team.
The Coordinator will play a key role in USM’s efforts to improve student retention and provide comprehensive onboarding and orientation programs to new students from the moment of matriculation through their first year as members of the USM Community. The Coordinator will oversee the Husky Participate & Connect Course (FYE 101), a 1-credit course required for all new residential students and recommended for new commuter students. In accordance with this focus, the Coordinator will oversee the development and implementation of FYE101 curriculum, faculty/instructor hiring and training, activities and programs that are responsive to students’ needs, develop community, and are conducive to the academic mission of the university.
The Coordinator works in cooperation with The Director, Assistant Director and Project Assistant to execute elements of virtual and in-person orientation programs including facilitating sessions, training orientation leaders and assisting with execution of other onboarding programs as needed. The Coordinator provides leadership in creating programs and resources which foster understanding, appreciation and celebration of diversity among USM Community members, especially incoming students.
This is a full-time position with an annual salary up to $43,500 commensurate with experience. This position is responsible for work on all three of the USM Campuses: Portland, Gorham, and occasionally Lewiston-Auburn.

- Bachelor’s degree or completion of degree by time of appointment, and minimum three-year previous experience in Higher Education or non-profit roles. This could include professional roles in orientation, residence life, student affairs, or student development, or paraprofessional roles such as graduate assistantships or undergraduate student leadership.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all types of people.
- Ability to understand work to be done, organize that work and delegate tasks to staff members.
- Ability to coordinate programs and processes, and to synthesize them into successful student and departmental services
