Job Summary:
The successful candidate will be a working engineer/leader who is a team player providing diverse project management, technical, and organizational services in support of world class food products manufacturing, processing, and packaging by performing the duties outlined below. This position will be instrumental in delivering on corporate KPIs including maximizing overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), driving down the cost of goods sold (COGS), and maximizing profitability (i.e. EBITDA)
This position reports to the company’s Chief Operating Officer.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The successful candidate will be a working engineer/leader who is a team player providing diverse project management, technical, and organizational services in support of world class food products manufacturing, processing, and packaging by performing the duties outlined below.
  • This position will be instrumental in delivering on corporate KPIs including maximizing overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), driving down the cost of goods sold (COGS), and maximizing profitability (i.e. EBITDA).
  • This position reports to the company’s Chief Operating Officer.
  • Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The successful candidate will be a proven effective leader exhibiting exceptional servant leadership skills. He/she will perform the following duties as well as directing, coaching, developing, and mentoring direct reports and others providing the same or similar services.
  • Successful candidate will provide diverse hands-on engineering and technical services in support of food products manufacturing and packaging operations at multi-state facilities.
  • Applies engineering and business principles to successfully address wide ranging manufacturing, production, packaging, construction, maintenance, process, operating, environmental, & other technical/business challenges.
  • Actively participates in strategic planning and development of long-range planning.
  • Prepares and/or directs preparation and/or modification of designs, contract documents, specifications, equipment purchase orders, drawings, construction schedules, & technical reports.
  • Establishes engineering/equipment standards and pre-qualifies equipment suppliers.
  • Designs processes, selects equipment, and prepares layouts in support of the manufacture and packaging of food products. Designs may involve such things as equipment layouts, instrumentation, controls, piping, machine modifications, heat transfer, HVAC, industrial ventilation, and other.
  • Prepares cost estimates and authorization for expenditure requests (AFE).
  • Manages projects and contracts including associated budgets & schedules.
  • Participates in vendor selections and negotiates equipment prices & construction contracts.
  • Evaluates the necessity of hiring outside engineering and technical consultants and pre-qualifies, hires, coordinates, and periodically reviews the activities of same as necessary.
  • Pre-qualifies, hires, & coordinates the activities of contractors, and periodically reviews their performance.
  • Inspects construction sites & project work to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering plans, specifications, and construction standards. Sometimes coordinates construction activities at the project site.
  • Reviews and authorizes payment of vendor & contractor invoices.
  • Uses computer assisted engineering, word processing, spreadsheets, design software, and other technical aids to prepare designs, reports and other documents.
  • Designs and/or procures systems & services to interface/integrate machines, hardware, and software.
  • Evaluates existing field installations, including operating procedures, and recommends changes to eliminate machine or system malfunctions/downtime, improve efficiency, reduce costs, & improve safety.
  • Periodically monitors energy usage at selected facilities & seeks out alternative energy sources, arrangements, & tariffs to minimize energy use & costs.
  • Supports continuous improvement efforts and assists with the company’s planet sustainability initiatives.
  • Works with property insurer & leadership team to assist in maintaining a reasonable balance between risk reduction and cost of insurance.
  • Coordinates environmental compliance through consultation with the various facilities. Oversees the preparation of regulatory reports and reviews & approves same. Ensures timely submittal of all required reports.
  • Endeavors, through continuing professional development, to stay abreast of the latest developments, industry standards, practices, regulations, etc. pertaining to engineering department services as they relate to company operations.
  • Periodically reviews the performance of direct reports.
  • Other tasks as assigned and/or otherwise determined to be needed in the best interest of the company.

  • 6σ certification at some level is a plus
  • Education & Experience:
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or other relevant discipline from an accredited college or university
  • An advanced degree in engineering or business is a plus
  • At least 15 years related experience.
  • CAD experience desirable (Autocad and/or Solidworks a plus).
  • Experience with MS Office software required (Word, Excel, Outlook, & PowerPoint)
  • Experience with MS Project is a plus
  • Experience in a Lean Manufacturing environment is a plus
  • Experience with Allen Bradley PLCs, HMIs, & Servo Systems a plus
  • Other
  • Based at the corporate offices in Richmond, VA serving all company locations (Currently VA, CA, KS, & SC)
  • Routine travel is required
