Agency Description
The Managing Director’s Office (MDO) manages and oversees the operations of the City. Working with five Cabinet-level Deputies, operational oversight is divided into specific departmental clusters: Health and Human Services, Community and Culture, Community Services, Public Safety and Criminal Justice, and Transportation and Infrastructure.
The Counsel Fees Unit is part of the Office of Policy and Strategic Initiatives for Criminal Justice and Public Safety (CJPS) in the Managing Director’s Office. Other offices in CJPS include the Office of Criminal Justice (OCJ), Office of Violence Prevention (OVP), Office of Reentry Partnerships (ORP), Office of Victim Advocate (OVA), and Town Watch Integrated Services (TWIS).
The Counsel Fees Unit is responsible for processing the payment of conflict counsel fees.
This is a clerical accounting position, which involves the application of bookkeeping principles and practices. An employee in this class performs standard bookkeeping duties in recording, reviewing, and processing financial records and documents. Duties also include corresponding with court appointed vendors, judiciary, and other outside agencies. This position will report directly to the Counsel Fees Unit Supervisor.
Essential Functions
A Clerk in the Counsel Fees Unit will be responsible for the following duties:
- Review and process payments for court appointed vendors.
- Verify validity of court appearances of counsel.
- Examine receipts.
- Mathematical accuracy.
- Post accounting data to ledgers, books, registers, and journals.
- Makes routine adjustments to accounts, which includes preparing daily summary and monthly cumulative reports.
- Maintain expenditure and budgetary control accounts and prepares necessary reports relating to account status.
- Cross-reference docketing information with vouchers in CPCMS.
- Research vendor check payments and account holds in FAMIS.
- Correspond with court appointed vendors, judiciary, and other outside agencies.
- Complete other clerical functions, including copying, filing and record retention.
- Bend and lift 30 to 50 pounds daily.
Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Basic clerical practices
- Bookkeeping principles and practices
- Computer keyboard literacy
Ability to:
- Use personal computer as a part of daily activities.
- Perform detailed work and make arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately.
- Prepare routine financial reports and statements.
- Apply established methods to financial transactions.
- Interpret and communicate information regarding the status of payments to vendors.
- Maintain a professional relationship with vendors, judiciary and other outside agencies.
- Bend and lift 30 to 50 pounds.
Work-Life
Working hours are generally 37.5 hours per week. Our team is currently hybrid with both remote and in-office days; however, the position can opt to come in the office each day if desired. All Counsel Fees Staff are required to work in the office at least two (2) days per week.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Applicant should have a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in clerical accounting work.
OR
- Completion of a certificate program in accounting at an accredited college or university.
OR
- Equivalent combinations of training and experience providing the characteristics required.

Salary Range: $35,000 - $37,170
