JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Facility Maintenance & Service, the Supervisor of Custodial Services is responsible for the operational management of the school’s custodial services. The Supervisor plans and manages the team, supplies and technical resources to ensure that the school facilities are cleaned in accordance with appropriate health and safety standards for educational facilities. Develops and implements goals and standards for custodial services at the school.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Management
- Manages the custodial services activities including training, procurement and personnel management; provides technical expertise in custodial areas specific to a school.
- Leads the Night Custodial Supervisor.
- Verifies and approves invoices for payment, ensuring price and quantity accuracy.
- Manages supply inventory of custodial equipment and supplies.
- Ensures that staff have a clear understanding of their work responsibilities and expectations.
- Provide on-the-job training programs for new employees.
- Provide annual written employee evaluations for all custodial staff. Reviews and approves the Night Custodial Supervisor’s evaluation of night shift custodians to ensure consistency of standards.
- Manage staff performance through performance appraisals, staff recognition, attendance management, current position descriptions, and appropriate corrective discipline.
- Monitor changes in state and federal laws regarding the use and handling of all chemicals and compounds used in custodial services.
- Prepare written status reports as required on all custodial projects and concerns.
- Solicit quotes or best pricing for custodial equipment, supplies, or services used at the school.
- Adhere to all purchasing policies adopted by the school.
Planning
- Develops the custodial work schedules, assigns tasks, reviews workloads, and makes recommendations for alteration.
- Develops, implements, and maintains the quality standards required to maintain cleanliness and safety in the facilities.
- Develop, implement and oversee maintenance programs for all custodial equipment.
- Organize ongoing staff development training programs.
- Focuses the custodial staff on achieving the operational goals, adjusting work duties and processes as required.
- Assist in the development of the annual operating budget as needed.
Problem Solving
- Analyzes workflow and workload trends and patterns to identify opportunities for improvement, resource allocation, and cost-benefit.
- Implements work process and supply changes to effect positive opportunities.
- Make recommendations to the director on the replacement or disposal of custodial equipment.
- Identify and report potential problems and safety concerns related to building use and occupancy.
- Sets goals and objectives and solve issues and concerns when they arise.
Client Service Orientation
- Provide quality control and oversight of all contractual custodial services employed on campus which includes conducting routine inspections.
- Anticipates potential obstacle to service delivery and develop alternate solutions.
- Explores emerging issues with faculty and staff to determine their needs and identifies the measures necessary to meet their needs within the allocated budget.
Performs other duties as assigned
SCHOOL SAFETY
- Participate in the development of a safe and healthy workplace.
- Comply with the instructions given for their own safety and health and that of others, in adhering to safe work procedures.
- Take reasonable care to ensure their own safety and health and that of others.
- Report any injury, hazard, or illness immediately, to their Supervisor and Human Resources.
- Not place others at risk by any act or omission, not willfully or recklessly interfere with safety equipment.
- Act as a role model by demonstrating safe work behaviors.
- Identify, assess if necessary, and control hazards within area of responsibility.
- Ensure that equipment/supplies are properly maintained.
- Maintain relevant knowledge of safety laws.
- Mandatory reporting of sexual abuse to law enforcement or child protective services, and Human Resources. Sexual abuse includes child molestation, any actual or alleged illegal or otherwise wrongful sexual conduct with a minor, and serial sexual misconduct, any actual or alleged illegal or otherwise wrongful sexual conduct with more than one victim; and committed by or alleged to have been committed by any perpetrator who is not a student of an included entity.
- Develop safe work procedures and ensure adherence to procedures.
- Ensure compliance of safety policies and procedures.
- Communicate safety issues with employees.
- Ensure that employees are provided information, instruction, training and supervision that they need to work safely.
- Ensure that employees are aware of and abide by all relevant safety procedures.
- Encourage early reporting of incidents and forward information to Manager and Human Resources immediately.
QUALIFICATIONS and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications
- Tech school experience, or six years of progressive experience in managing a large-scale custodial service department or housekeeping department in a hotel or hospital.
- Adequate computer skills: word processing and database management.
- Able to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Excellent verbal and writing skills.
- Have a service-oriented attitude and can work well with faculty, staff, and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Our campus consists of multiple buildings on 44 hilly acres that requires walking uphill, on stairs, and across playing fields. Will need to bend, lift, and carry items. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). For safety reasons, it is important to see and hear within normal parameters and possess the ability to move around with little to no difficulty. Pre-hire and periodic physical functional capacity tests will be given by a third party to ensure the employee can perform the tasks safely and for the safety of others.
MENTAL DEMANDS
On a daily basis must frequently problem solve, make decisions, interpret data, organize, speak, write, plan, and clearly communicate.
