Under indirect supervision, performs interpretative microscopic evaluation of gynecologic and cytologic specimens, including fine needle aspirations and Non-gynecologic specimens. Reports final cytologic interpretation of normal gynecologic specimens and prepares preliminary interpretation of abnormal samples for pathologist's diagnosis. Records and analyzes findings and reports data in accordance with accepted practice.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.
  • Performs microscopic examination of cellular specimen to recognize, identify and screen sample for evidence of morphologic changes; analyzes and classifies cellular constituents in accordance wit established criteria.
  • Identifies questionable cellular configuration and reviews patient clinical history to establish preliminary interpretation of abnormal morphological features based upon cellular evidence in conjunction with pertinent cognitive knowledge; reports findings and presents specimen to supervisor and / or pathologist for evaluative diagnosis.
  • Prepares final reports of cytological specimens which have been classified as normal or without evidence of cellular abnormalities.
  • Performs cytopreparatory techniques and staining procedures ensuring that established techniques are utilized; labels specimens and conforms to standards of quality control program.
  • Keeps abreast of changing techniques, procedures, interpretative findings associated with cytology through participation in continuing education.
  • Performs quality control procedures according to established protocol.
  • Assists supervisor with training new employees in departmental procedures and cytology criteria; assumes limited supervisory responsibilities when requested.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience
  • N/A

Education
  • Completed an accredited cytology program.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration
  • Possess CT (ASCP) Board of Registry certification.

Additional Requirements:
  • Testing Required: Satisfactorily completed Cytology Proficiency Testing events (mandated in 2005 by CLIA and CAP requirements). Must have documentation of passing scores (90%) for all testing events.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of Thin Prep training with documentation and completion of Imager Thin Prep Microscopic training with documentation.
