The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is seeking to fill an executive service position as a
Deputy Director, Office of Traffic & Safety (DOT Executive IV) located in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone who meets the preferred qualifications listed below.

The Deputy Director will share responsibility with the Director in leading, directing, and managing activities of the Office of Traffic and Safety (OOTS). This office leads SHA traffic engineering, highway safety and motor carrier programs, as well as shared leadership of the ITS/CHART program. This position provides leadership and management of office programs in the areas of design, construction, and operation of traffic control devices and systems to include overseeing and coordinating the processes to design, manufacture, construct, install, inspect and maintain highway signing, highway lighting and traffic signals; overseeing the provision of liaison and support to the district traffic engineering staff, other SHA units and local jurisdictions for traffic engineering programs; providing leadership for Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) and ITS programs, including coordination with the CHART and CVISN programs; and providing focus within SHA for the review and development of new traffic engineering technologies and products.

This position is involved in the development of OOTS policies, programs, and goals. The position will also evaluate internal policies, processes, and procedures to identify and oversee implementation of areas for improved business operations. This position also serves as the Director in their absence.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in professional engineering, three (3) years of engineering experience should have been in construction, maintenance or program management of traffic control devices or traffic operations. One (1) year of the experience should have been in consultant management, direct supervision or management of engineering or construction and maintenance staff.

Note: U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the minimum qualifications may be substituted for the required education and experience on a year-for-year basis.

The ideal candidate should possess the following:

  • A licensed, professional engineer in the State of Maryland
  • Proficient in construction project management and administration including plan and specifications interpretation and application on major/complex and areawide projects
  • Proficient in maintaining budget, schedule and systems for multiple projects
  • Expert knowledge of traffic engineering principles, federal/state traffic engineering regulations, policies, standards, and guidelines
  • Expert knowledge of standards and specification of construction
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidates must possess a Class C driver's license valid in the State of Maryland
