Job Summary
This position is responsible for the following:
  • All student Billing and Collections activity for the University and will oversee the collection efforts and delinquency controls of the university, ensuring money owed is billed and received correctly and promptly.
  • Compliance with all state and federal regulations about student accounts.
  • Ensuring all billing and collections benchmarks are met as described in our internal collection procedures.
  • Responsible for the execution of the state warrant hold program.
  • Management of the collection staff activities and processes.
  • Management of executive education including billing, specialized collections, and customer service.
  • Oversee the setup of PeopleSoft payment plan and collection modules.
  • Participate and present at the various freshman, transfer, and international student orientations.
  • This position requires independent thought and decisions, setting up payment arrangements with students, and making determinations of when accounts should be sent to outside collections or to the Office of General Counsel.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related progressive experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • 10 years of accounting experience
    • At least 5 years specifically related to accounts receivable and collection activity.
  • 8 years of management experience
    • At least 5 years of experience managing an accounts receivable team.
  • Familiar with the Fair Debt Collections Act
  • Exhibit excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Good critical thinking skills and exercise sound judgment
  • ACA Certification
  • 3 years PeopleSoft Campus Solutions Student Financials experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Student Accounts is a member of the Student Financial Services leadership team and a direct report of the Senior Director of Financial Services. This position is in charge of all the billing and collections for tuition and fees for the university. The Director will supervise employees and make decisions regarding the collection of student debts, which is essential to reduce risk, increase cash flows, and reduce delinquency.
  • Oversee the entire student billing and collections process, which includes planning all of the billing cycles, payment deadline reminders, student registration cancellation process, and collection activity process.
  • Manage collection agencies, performing agency audits to ensure our collection agency partners are compliant with all federal regulations such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. This also includes the reconciliation of the collection agency receivables.
  • Perform due diligence audits of student accounts to ensure all student accounts have gone through all of the billing and internal collections processes prior to being sent to an outside collection agency.
  • Train and manage a team of six employees, as well as cross-training other Bursar Office personnel in the proper collection techniques and management of student receivables.
  • Oversee and approve the placement of student accounts placed with the Office of General Counsel and the State Warrant Hold program.
  • Oversee the management of all student bankruptcy accounts, ensuring compliance with bankruptcy law.
  • Oversee the reconciliation of all Perkins and collection liabilities balance sheet accounts, ensuring the Campus Solutions and Finance Management System balances are in sync and research any reconciling items.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting any system issues as it pertains to the billing and collection modules in PeopleSoft, working with the developers to resolve any and all issues.
