Job Summary:
Provide operational leadership and management required to deliver and support core business software applications used to market, transact, operate, administer and manage the company's business. Business software applications include: 1 - purchased (licensed) software solutions run internally; 2 - custom developed (in-house and out-sourced) software; 3 - Software-as-a-Service (cloud) solutions; 4 - integration between various software solutions; 5 – business intelligence and analytics; and 6 - business-to-business electronic data interchange with customers, suppliers and business partners. Lead, direct and guide the selection or design/development, implementation, maintenance, support, enhancement and improvement of business software applications solutions used by the company.
Manage: 1 - the company's internal IT Development/Support staff; 2 - the company's Application Development Methodology; and 3 - multiple simultaneous projects. Work directly on and successfully complete assigned projects, as this is a "hands on" management position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Selection and consistent employment of appropriate application development methodologies (SDLC) by the IT Development Team, addressing proper security and data retention as part of the design & development cycle. Coordinate with team to provide realistic effort estimates. Assign resources to projects/tasks and communicate direction regarding priorities. Monitor and communicate the status of development projects. Maintain control of development projects by approving project plans, specifications, test plans and implementation plans (key milestones) prior to execution and managing execution for on-time and on-budget completion.
- Hire, develop, maintain & retain (collectively “staff”) the IT Development Team with capable personnel willing and able to meet the company's present and future IT goals/objectives/business requirements. Recommend adjustments to the IT organizational structure as necessary to address both the dynamic needs of the company and consider the personal goals and desires of the staff members. Ensure employee development takes place to: 1 - Continue to provide a capable Development Team able to meet the company's dynamic business requirements. 2 - Be knowledgeable of new developments in the IT field, in order for the company to be able to properly leverage new technologies. 3 - Address personal staff development goals. Provide a desirable work environment, in order to attract and retain employees, thus maximizing the investment the company has made in individuals hired and developed.
- Manage Quality Assurance associated with the IT Development team. Review deliverables for adherence to specifications, compliance with development standards (to include proper documentation), efficiency and effectiveness prior to release for User Acceptance Testing. Review Test Plans for adequacy and the results of Tests to determine if software solutions are ready for movement to Production. Interact with company personnel at the management, project management and direct user levels to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of the development staff, business software applications, and vendors in addressing the current and future needs of the entire company. Recommend/make adjustments as necessary/appropriate.
- Complete “hands-on” projects and tasks assigned to oneself. Examples include business analysis/re-engineering, specification development, project management, applications development, software/vendor selections, and implementation support. Support/coach IT development staff by working directly on specific tasks, as appropriate. Provide direct support or guidance to the Business user community.
- Develop the annual IT development Operating Budget. Develop the IT development portion of the annual Capital Budget. Manage actual expenses to budget.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures to manage the IT development function at the company. Manage compliance with policies & procedures.
- Continue personal professional development in the areas of business, leadership and information technology. Continue to keep up-to-date with relevant business software application developments relevant to the company’s business. Cross-train on various business software applications and infrastructure used at the company. Continue to expand knowledge of company's business.
- Travel (which will include overnights) on occasion to company sites, external vendors and training sites.
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in Business, Information Systems, Computer Science or Engineering and a minimum of 8 years direct experience with significant IT Development/Project/Implementation Management; or Bachelor’s degree in Business, Information Systems, Computer Science or Engineering and a minimum of 10 years direct experience with significant IT Applications Development/Project/Implementation Management.
- Experience working in a medium to large multi-location company, operating multiple shifts on a 7 x 24 basis, with a centralized IT function required.
- Experience working in a manufacturing or distribution company strongly preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies required.
- A deep understanding of the following technologies and practice areas is required:
- ERP Systems
- Integration
- Multiple programming languages
- Experience managing the following technology areas are preferred, but not required:
- SAP S/4HANA, including Fiori, BPC, CRM, and TPM
- Cloud solutions
- SAP PI-PO, Data Services, and CP-I
- .Net Development
- Business Intelligence
- MS SQL Server
- Experience working in a manufacturing or distribution package software applications support
- Must have verifiable knowledge of, or experience, in the following areas: business analysis/re-engineering, application development life cycle, specification writing, budget development/management (including capital), large IT project management, vendor selection/management.

- Strong management and leadership skills required.
- Ability to be detailed-oriented while still maintaining a big picture perspective. Must have a solid understanding of corporate-wide functions, specifically how technology supports business processes.
- Ability to multi-task between several items at once.
- Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to react under pressure to any given situation that may arise, in a professional manner and with positive results, in support of a multi-location, 7 X 24 environment.
- Ability to work hard to effect change in a dynamic, high standards environment while maintaining a positive approach with management, peers, and subordinates.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Candidate will be expected to communicate to employees and suppliers at all levels (including company executives) via: face to face meetings, conference calls, written messages and project documentation. Ideal candidate must have excellent presentation skills and meeting facilitation skills.
