JOB DESCRIPTION – Director of Nursing

Summary: Will report to and be supervised by Administrator of Residential Facility or their designee. This is a full time position. Generally, this is a day shift, Monday through Friday position, with on call after hours and weekends as needed to fulfill all DON responsibilities.

Objective: Will be responsible for overall nursing care in facility and supervision of nursing staff.

Qualifications:

  • Licensed Practical Nurse, licensed in the State of Indiana and in good standing with the State Licensing Bureau.
  • Supervisory experience, preferably in a residential or long term care setting
  • Experience in working in a residential setting
  • In good physical condition, able to perform emergency nursing care to residents, staff or visitors (must be able to lift, run, give CPR)

Job Task List:

Staffing

  • Daily Staffing
  • Monthly Scheduling
  • Recruit new staff
  • Assure TB tests are compliant

Supervision of Nursing Staff

  • Screen prospective nursing staff according to state regulations and company policy.
  • Be responsible for the hiring, supervising, counseling and retention of nursing staff, while following company staffing guidelines.
  • Assure nursing staff certifications and annual TB tests are current.
  • Schedule nursing staff according to staffing budget and the current needs of the residents.

Resident Services

  • Pre-admission assessment of new residents
  • Admission paperwork for new residents
  • Prepare charts for new residents
  • Initial nursing Assessment, then monthly assessments on each resident to assure we are meeting their needs at all times.
  • Lead the development of each resident’s service plan in cooperation with the physician, Dietary, Activities, the residents and the responsible parties.
  • Update service plan every 6 months
  • Hold service plan meetings with families and residents
  • Assure changes in condition (physical, mental and psychosocial) and effects of medications are reported to families and physicians
  • Provide for administration of medications, and supervision of residents who self administer medications
  • Assure resident rights are protected
  • Assure each resident’s clinical record is maintained according to state regulations and company policy.
  • Give all injectables to residents.
  • Authorize all PRN’s given by a QMA.
  • Supervise nursing care of residential care facility
  • Assure all nursing practices are being followed for the benefit of all residents.

Administration

  • Communicate with Administrator or their designee all unusual occurrences.
  • Review nursing policies and procedures to assure they are meeting state regulations .
  • Review nursing policies and procedures as needed, but at least annually with Administrator or their designee.
  • Communicate with and work in cooperation with the Pharmacy Consultant according to state guidelines and company policy.
  • Assist Administration in following and carrying out all state guidelines related to residential facilities.
  • Assist with training and continuing education of staff as needed.
  • Review the Infection Control Policies as needed but at least annually with the Administrator or their designee in order to assure State Infection Control Guidelines are being followed.
  • Other duties as assigned by facility administration.
