The University of Southern Indiana (USI) invites applications for the position of
Disability Resources Coordinator. The Disability Resources Coordinator administers all aspects of the University’s disability services for students while adhering to strict rules of confidentiality and all applicable laws related to disability.
Essential Functions include but are not limited to:
- Research, develop, and administer the department’s disability resources using guidelines, standards and best practices in the field of higher education disability services administration, while maintaining a commitment to, and promoting student self-determination.
- Serve as a main point of contact for students requesting disability accommodations, guiding students through the process of registration, ensuring appropriate documentation is obtained, and that reasonable procedures are followed.
- Assist students in assessing and planning for appropriate accommodations, facilitate communication between students and faculty members, and advocate for students as needed to ensure that classroom accommodations are provided.
- Advise and assist faculty members in the provision of appropriate in-class accommodations.
- For students without an already established diagnosis, and for whom a disability is not readily apparent, assist students to find an appropriate professionals able to assess the student’s condition and make recommendations.
- Assist students with disabilities who have personal/social concerns to develop insight and self-advocacy skills, improve interpersonal relationships, build self-regard, and adjust to college life; referring students for clinical/therapy services as appropriate.
- As appropriate, assist students with disabilities to clarify their life-direction and vocational goals; referring students to career-related services as appropriate
- Refer and consult with the University’s ADA Coordinator on matters related to compliance, appeal, and grievance procedures.
- Provide training, direction, and guidance to faculty and administrative staff on matters related to students with disabilities.
- Represent Disability Resources on appropriate University committees.
- Serve on community, state, and national committees, consortia, associations; and various task forces to stay aware of local and national information and resources. Enhance professional knowledge and skills through membership in professional associations and by attending workshops and conferences.
- Serve as a liaison to the community, state, and regional agencies, referring students to these outside resources when and where appropriate.
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
- Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or other related human services area strongly preferred. Bachelors in one of these fields is required.
- Two years relevant work experience required, five or more years strongly preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (as amended), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (as amended), and other disability-rights laws required.
- Familiarity with community and government-based disability resources is required.
- Special knowledge and skills relevant to disability issues in postsecondary education is required. Experience in a college setting is preferred.
- Ability to evaluate documentation from various medical, psychological and therapeutic disciplines to determine appropriate accommodations is required.
- This position requires the application of effective interpersonal communication and relationship building skills with students, their families, faculty and staff, even when strong emotions are expressed. Must establish rapport, build trust, problem-solve and maintain confidentiality.
