What’s the role –

As required by the Domestic Freight Manager, the domestic freight operations role is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of spot and term equipment within portfolio, including:

• Conduct all freight operational activities promptly and professionally ensuring that all obligations and requirements under the charter party contract terms are met. This refers both to charters internally and with third parties
• Ensure the efficient operation of the time-chartered vessel including the issuance of voyage orders, the correct preparation of cargo tanks in accordance with charter party terms and conditions
• Ensure that bunker procurement is optimized in terms of location and cost and in line with Shell policy & guidelines
• Ensure that agency appointments are made promptly and in line with Shell policies & guidelines and that agents & master are made aware of any relevant charter party recoverable costs where applicable
• Responsible for fleet optimization / cross-utilization of equipment within own portfolio
• Provides technical vessel advice relating to marine cargo handling and cargo compatibility issues for oil products and chemicals
• Use internal tools for ship operations and records management (see further details below)
• Liaise with STS and third-party Time Charter ship owners regarding ship issues such as SIRE inspections (when required or expiring) crewing, maintenance and dry-docking schedules and to record this information accurately
• Support Domestic Chartering Strategy both for term (TC) and spot ship trade activities
• Identify and maximize the embedded optionality within charter party agreements (i.e. laycans, demurrage rates, ship space parceling, ship swaps, backhaul opportunities)
• Liaise with oil operators to ensure smooth operations to avoid supply disruption and to optimize vessel returns and usage
• Provide information regarding controlled and chartered ship positions & activities to assist with ship scheduling in a constantly changing environment
• Ensures accurate and timely invoice payment and cost allocation of controlled and voyage chartered marine vessels
• Work with other groups (demurrage, claims, etc...) to provide timely and accurate information and documentation
• Identify areas for improvement for administration of freight activities
• Assist chartering team in obtaining vetting and port clearances of spot ships and other spot charter administration
• Provide necessary documentation to charterers and terminals to ensure smooth and efficient clearance of Group controlled tonnage
• Keep adequate records to meet the company’s legal and fiscal obligations
• Effectively communicate with traders, schedulers, and other team members to develop logistical solutions to meet commercial excellence
• Manage a solid networking foundation amongst key internal and external contacts
• Successful candidate, once acclimated, will provide sufficient back up within assigned team.

Dimensions:

• This position reports to the Domestic Freight Manager
• The position works to support a freight spend of c$400m with 130 vessels/barges on charter at any one time, through 400 voyages and 200 million bbls of oil movements per year.
• Main interfaces are with Crude & Products Trading desks in STUSCO & STC and chemicals in SOPUS, with additional interfaces with Upstream & Global Commercial
• External interfaces with c-suite of vessel owners, shipbrokers and agents

Challenges

• One of the most important elements in vessel management is the ability to monitor the performance and profitability of each voyage or the fleet. In order to achieve this, it is imperative that costs are accurately reflected and, where applicable, recovered from charterers or ship owners. The maintenance of accurate management information is a key tool in this process.
• The successful candidate will be able to work independently within a dynamic, fast paced and business critical trading environment. They must be highly motivated and possess strong analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills in order to recognize and solve problems quickly. Highly effective planning and organization skills are essential in order to meet the team’s demanding schedules and goals. The candidate must be resilient under pressure. As this is an operational role, the candidate will be on call 24/7

Skills & Requirements

What we need from you –

• Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred, preferably in a business discipline and / or 3 years equivalent years of industry related experience
• Prior experience in ship operations management or broker experience preferred
• Proven track record of consistent high performance
• Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to prioritize and manage tasks with competing deadlines
• Ability to work independently and within a team environment with minimal supervision
• Aptitude to learn quickly
• Strong organizational skills, demonstrated ability to meet daily deadlines, and attention to detail are essential to meet the departments demanding schedules and goals
• Demonstrates a commercial understanding of the role
• Flexibility to cover multiple desks
• Strong oral and written communications skills
