Children & Families of Iowa is seeking a qualified candidate with compassion for victims of domestic violence, to work at our shelter and join a team of very experienced and knowledgeable people. The primary working hours are M-F, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with some weekends or partial weekend shifts as needed.

Shelter Advocate Sample Job Duties:

  • Provide crisis intervention, safety planning, DV101 Education, resources and referrals to CFI and community programs to support survivors of domestic violence. Utilize an equitable lens when assessing needs for marginalized populations.
  • Ensure that all survivors entering shelter are seen for a comprehensive intake session within 48 hours of arrival. Meet with assigned survivors at least two times weekly to provide support, education, resources, and goal setting.
  • Develop knowledge of all CFI programs that can support DV survivors, along with community and state-wide resources. Establish professional relationships with culturally specific providers and other professionals in the community in order to centralize intake process to shelter and make seamless referrals for clients as needed.
  • Facilitate groups and house meetings. Ensure consistency of group and meeting schedule.
  • Maintain day-to-day operation of the program by implementing a trauma-informed care philosophy and trauma-responsive interventions to ensure the emotional and physical safety of survivors and their children.
  • Maintain the overall appearance of the facility to provide a clean, safe and secure environment. Report any need for maintenance changes or any security needs to appropriate parties.

Requirements:

Associate of Arts degree in human services related field and/or demonstrated experience with crisis intervention, domestic violence or trauma survivors required. Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, social work, or human service-related field preferred. Ability to speak and write secondary language fluently preferred but not required.
